Donnie's Day at the Beach

Mia Chylds

This day started out like any other, but there was something extra special in the air. Donnie wakes up to a much sunnier room. Sunlight so bright it lit up every corner of his room in a bright yellow. He could here birds singing happily in the trees. There was a certain smell in the air. Yes, he thought it smells like the sea. He got up in a hurry washed his face, brushed his teeth and was off and running. No school today it must be Saturday. In the kitchen he could smell Mommas pancakes and eggs on the stovetop, but what was going through Donnie's mind was fun time, play time. Something reminded him of lots of water and lots of fun in the sun. "Morning Momma" he says as he runs up to his mom who was setting the table for breakfast. She said to him smiling "Good morning sleepy head, well your up early." "Momma, he asked eagerly Can we go down to the Sea today. "Of course" she answered smiling, as long as you clean your room first. "Well", he said as he frowned, "okay". He sat down at the table and his frown turned into a smile as momma served him his favorite, pancake and scrambled eggs. "Mmmmm" Yummy he said, and just as quickly as the pancakes were on the table he ate everything on his plate and swallowed a big glass of orange juice. As momma stood in amazement he ran to his room and picked up all his toys, made his bed, grabbed his sand pail and was ready. "Hold on there Mr. Speedy, momma said as she gathered a picnic basket full of goodies and of course the goggles. They both ran to the car and went off to spend a fun day at the beach.

"Yay'' Donnie said, "Here we are" as they drove up on the sandy dune. Donnie jumped out of the car and started running down to the shoreline. "Yippee" He yelled with his sand pail in hand and his towel in the other and his flip flops were just flip-pity flopping on the warm sand. He couldn't wait to see, touch and feel the sand and the water. It was one of his favorite things to do. Donnie went to the edge of the little waves of water coming up and touching his feet . He looked back to Momma and shouted..."Momma, the water is so warm, can I go swim. Momma looked up and smiled as she set down the picnic basket towels and goggles. "Yes, you may but you have to wait for me". Donnie was just so anxious he wanted to jump in the water and splash around but he remembered what Momma says, "Safety First". So he waded in the water scuffling the bottom of the sandy water with his feet. As he looked down he saw these crabby critters. Every time he kicked up the sand a little bit they would come up. He was excited and wanted to see where these little crabby critters were coming from. Momma came and kneeled next to him. Momma look he said little crabby critters, but Momma could not see them. What are you looking at Momma asked. She smiled as Donnie could not get these little crabby critters to stay up long enough for her to see them. Momma, I see these little crabby critters they pop up when I kick up the wet sand and they go and dig back into the sand. "Are they baby crabs?" he asked Momma. "Well they can be" answered Momma. You know Donnie the ocean and sand run for miles and miles. Donnie asked with a look of awe on his face. "Does it go on for trillions and billions and millions and gazillions of miles?" "Is That why we can't see a house or city on the other side of the ocean. "Yes", said Momma it is endless, and there are many kinds of fish and critters in the sea. Momma opened her eyes gleefully and said, "Oh and there are so many pretty rainbow colored fish in the sea". "Pretty rainbow colored fish". Donnie ran with excitement back to the beach chair and grabbed his goggles with excitement. "I am going to put on my goggles to see the pretty rainbow colored fish under the sea. Donnie and Momma swam with goggles looking for the rainbow colored fish in the sea, but all they saw were these little crabby critters every time they would kick up the sand. "Momma , Donnie said "Are you sure there are pretty rainbow colored fish in the sea. Yep" she said. "Well then why can't I see them, are they afraid of me?" "Are they sleeping" ? maybe we are at the wrong beach". "Oh Donnie", Momma said "just wait a little longer". Don't be so impatient. You will see them soon. He grew tired of searching for the fish. Momma said "you know I think we need to give those rainbow colored fish some time maybe they're just shy. So both of them decided to get out of the water for a while and have a snack from the picnic basket. They both sat down on there beach towels exhausted. Donnie looked sad because they had not seen any pretty rainbow colored fish yet. While they sat eating there snacks Donnie jumped up and said "I know", the fish are hungry just like us, Momma, lets feed them and then they will come. Donnie up put his goggles on and grabbed some bread and ran down to the shoreline. He Jumped in the water while Momma tried to catch up with him. He went down to his little belly in water and laid down some of the bread at the bottom of the ocean. He would come back up for air while Momma watched. She asked "Do you see the fish yet. He would come up and say, "Not Yet...Soon...." By the fifth time he had done this Donnie seemed tired. I guess the pretty rainbow colored fish don't like me. Oh don't be silly, Momma said. Of course they like you. Well, if they like me why don't they want to eat my bread. Why don't they want to come out and play. Momma just looked at him and smiled. Donnie, she said remember how I told you how very big the sea is. Yes, he said. Well, on the other side of the sea there maybe a little boy just like you and the pretty rainbow colored fish are playing with him. "maybe when they are done playing with him Momma, do you think they can come and play with me. Of course, just don't give up on them, they will come.
Donnie's hands were getting wrinkled from being in the water so long. He said Momma, Maybe we can build the pretty colored rainbow fish a castle with a pool so they can come and live and play with me. Okay said Momma, can I help, Yep he said as he sat down by the shoreline and started digging into the sand with his little shovel and pail. Donnie built a castle with a pool with Momma till the sun was about to go to sleep in the sea. The sand castle that Donnie built with Momma had a very big door that touched the sea . The water would go into the pool in the castle. Donnie said see Momma it is perfect they even have a pool to swim in. Donnie put some more bread in the castle's pool. He waited and waited and waited. Momma I think that the pretty colored rainbow fish were tired from playing with the other little boy across the sea. They are now too tired to come play with me. Oh don't worry said Momma, as she pointed down to the pool in the castle, your crabby critters really like your bread and they are having fun playing eating and swimming in the castle that you built. Donnie just laughed and felt really happy. So next time we come to the beach I will build a new home and play with the crabby critters since the pretty colored rainbow fish are too busy to play with me. They both giggled and laughed as they both watched the crabby critters in the castle and pool they both built.
