DonQ's "Lazy Cocktails" Mojito Flavored Rum Review

Easy-to-Prepare Refreshing Cocktail for Under $2

Kathy Browning
As I write this, I'm sipping a DonQ Mojito. As a freelance food writer, I am often asked to sample products and write reviews. Such is the case with DonQ. When their marketing agency asked if they could send a sample bottle of their premium Puerto Rican rum, my response was an immediate, "Yes!"

The DonQ marketing rep offered the promise of being able to make homemade mojitos with 4 ingredients, in less than a minute. I love mojitos, but have never been able to master the muddling technique. Mine either have too much mint, too much rum, or too much club soda.

When my bottle of DonQ Mojito rum arrived, I was eager to give it a try. The question to be answered was could I really make a mojito in less than a minute? I set my watch, filled a glass with crushed ice, poured 3 ounces DonQ Mojito flavored rum, 1 ounce of Club Soda, and garnished with a sprig of fresh mint and lime slices.

Total mixing time: 52 seconds. I was casual about mixing, so my guess is you could actually make a mojito in less than 30 seconds if you hustled. That's my kind of drink!

DonQ Mojito rum is infused with the essential oils of fresh mint. There is no artificial flavoring and therefore, no nasty aftertaste. The rum is clear and the flavor subdued by the natural mint. The cocktail is light, refreshing, and pairs well with light appetizers or Latin cuisine.

As a writer, I can't resist conducting research about companies that provide sample products. I'll admit, I wasn't familiar with the DonQ brand. What I discovered is DonQ was founded by Don Juan Serrallés in 1865. Don Juan's father, Juan Sebastian Serrallés, was a Spaniard who settled in Puerto Rico in 1820 and founded a sugar cane plantation in the city of Ponce.

Since rum is made from sugarcane by-products, it makes good business sense to expand the sugarcane business by producing rum. DonQ has been producing quality rums for over 140 years. Today, the family business is operated by Felix Serrallés.

Felix opened USA headquarters in 2009 and launched flavored rums in the summer of 2010. The flavored rum portfolio includes: DonQ Coco, DonQ Limon, and DonQ Mojito.

Perhaps the most impressive accomplishment of the Serrallés family is the incorporation of sustainability. The modern distillery incorporates a series of processes to harvest energy through waste. The waste reclamation program generates energy and service water and provides industrial products that are sold to other businesses. The saved costs are passed along to consumers; making DonQ premium rums one of the most affordable spirits on the market.

The DonQ brand was named after Don Quixote; the fictional character in the novel, "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha," written by Spanish author, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in the early 1600s.

According to the DonQ website, "Just as Don Quixote represents the search for a perfect world, DonQ signifies the family's quest for perfection in rum."

I don't proclaim to be a rum connoisseur, but I do know that DonQ Mojito flavored rum is a smooth cocktail that is easy to make. Now that I've been introduced to this premium line of Puerto Rican rums, I can say with confidence it will become my preferred choice of spirits.

Do I say this because I received a free bottle of DonQ Mojito rum? No. I say this because this is the best mojito I have ever tasted. Now, I'm off to finish the rest of my delightful cocktail.
