Today, after hearing how Twitter is helping to spread authentic news about the revolution in Iran I have jumped into the Twitter pool. First I Googled Twitter and read an article about it. Next I went to their official homepage to check it out. The offer of a free Twitter account was enticing and before I knew it, I had signed up. Don't be afraid to try Twitter. It was so easy to do, just choose a name and password, and then surrender your email address.
Now I had done it, lured in like a child taking candy from a stranger, I am now a member of the Twitter community in 10 seconds or less. Twitter then asks you if you want to see if other people you know are twittering on Twitter. This screen, just like on facebook.com, is just an option. Twitter will scan your contacts list to let you know if anyone is a member as well. I declined and moved deeper into their website.
To get you over your Twitter phobia, they invite you to begin twitting right away. What a great idea. Just like at facebook.com there is an empty box inviting you to share "What are you doing?" I immediately typed in, "twitter virgin, totally freaked out." So far, no one is twittering a response.
I did a Twitter search for Iran and pressed enter. A Twitter page appears revealing text messages from real Iranian protesters and other concerned people around the globe. Wow! As I was reading the messages a line of text above the twitterings gives you in real time how many more twittering messages have come in to be posted under that topic. You can then refresh the page and read them. For the topic of Iran, one thousand new messages appeared within 20 minutes.
The Iran message board was asking people for help. On Twitter many people said that it would be beneficial to the protesters if as many people as possible changed their GMT and location settings to match Tehran. I jumped at the chance to "save the world while sitting on my ass" and changed my settings. All this participation in a revolution half a world away and I am still sitting in bed on a Sunday!
Don't be afraid to try Twitter. Go to their website now and sign up!
