Don't Be Apprehensive About Using a Credit Counselor

If you're experiencing serious financial difficulties, don't be apprehensive about the idea of contacting a credit counselor. In these financial times, a good credit counselor can be a real solution to your credit woes. The American public is carrying a debt of nearly two trillion dollars. You are not the only one experiencing difficulties. You will find that if you set aside your embarrassment and mistrust, a credit counseling service can do outstanding things to get you back on your financial feet.
Here are a few facts about credit counseling services and credit counselors in general.
•There is no minimum or maximum debt requirement to confer with a credit counselor. If your debt has reached a point where it is overwhelming you, it's time to seek out professional help.
•Like anything else, shop around for a counseling service. Compare fees and services. Call them and see if the staff seems friendly and accommodating. Ask for references of people they have helped through similar circumstances to yours. Make sure you will be comfortable with your credit counselor before deciding to work with them.
•Don't set your expectations sky high. Credit counselors can give you a lot of help to reduce your debt, stop harassment from collection agencies, and set up an affordable repayment plan, but they cannot do magic or perform miracles. They could possibly reduce your debt by as much as fifty percent, but they can't wave a wand and make it all go away.
•Ask your credit counselor how long he or she thinks it might take to get you out of this mess. Once your counselor has been working with you they will have a clear idea of your financial situation and may have a good guess about how long the repayment schedule will need to run and about when you might expect restoration of your good status. Of course if you are able to make repayment sooner than your counselor's projection, you will get your good credit back that much faster.
•Approaching a credit counselor will not reflect poorly on your credit score. Once the repayment plan has been decided upon and your creditors have agreed to it, a notation will be made in your credit record that reflects this.
•You will not be able to use your credit cards doing your period of repayment and it will be advised that you do not seek new credit from any other sources.
•When a credit counseling service tells you that they have federal recognition status that does not mean they are a federal entity, endorsed by the federal government, or that they have federal accreditation. These counseling services are simply registered for tax considerations.
•Credit counseling services are strictly confidential. There is no public notice of your arrangements with them. If these debts are in your name only, they will not even contact your husband or wife.
•Once you appoint a credit counseling service to work with you, they will contact your creditors and their collection people and the majority of harassing calls and collection efforts will stop. Some creditors may demand three months of consecutive payments before the collection efforts cease, but this is rare once they are convince you are committed to a repayment strategy.
