Don't Be a Cabinet Member John Edwards!

Sean Bracken
I talked about this in another article I wrote online about John Edwards pandering for a cabinet position. Well on the Today Show, John Edwards came out and said he would not want to be the running mate to Obama. Then Edwards did the usual politician shake and bake dance and dodged the question. I took that as a "yes" that he wants to be Attorney General.

It is no secret that many people want him to be Attorney General. A lot of people on the Democratic groups say that Edwards should be Attorney General. After all, many people see him as the guy that will scare the hell out of the corporations gouging and ripping off the American middle class. Many people see him as someone who will enforce the law and go after people who broke it. Many see him as the man who would be best in the administration for fighting poverty and injustice in America as well as around the world.

That is an easy thought to make by looking at his past history. Corporate greed and poverty are issues I deeply care about. I was a large supporter of Edwards this time and last time. I thought that Edwards was the best candidate for the job and would be the only one to bring real change to this country. Edwards has proven that too by taking on those big corporations as a trial lawyer and the things he has done in North Carolina that many Democrats and media people sadly chose to ignore.

Now both groups are coming to him and are suggesting he should be Attorney General or poverty czar. My advice I would give Edwards is to say no to both positions. There are many reasons for that. For one, Edwards will never get confirmed by the Senate to be in either position. Secondly, Edwards will not even be that good in these positions. Finally, Edwards can do fine and accomplish a great deal by creating independent organizations that do just this. So let's take a look at each reason in detail.

The first reason Edwards should not be Attorney General or poverty czar is because he would never get confirmed. Unless there is a massive tidal wave of Democrats winning in the Senate this year, the Republicans should be able to filibuster him easily. They have great reasons to do so. After all, the Republicans are in bed with the corporations, which means appointing an anti-corporate guy with anger to Attorney General or poverty czar would be terrible for corporations. Edwards would vigorously in the Republicans' eyes go after the corporations and would break them up. Therefore, since the Republicans love the corporatists a lot, they will block him with every ounce of energy they have.

The Republicans will even have help for that. Right wing commentator Bill O Reilly has a large grudge against John Edwards. I could actually see O Reilly creating a petition to block Edwards from being Attorney General or poverty czar. I think if people jammed the Senator's email boxes, which is what I think O Reilly will do, then the Republicans will listen to their constituents and block him. If Obama does nominate Edwards for any of those positions, jamming lawmaker's email boxes is exactly what I will do. That is a promise from me.

Another reason that Edwards should not do this is because he is going to humiliate himself. What I mean by that is rather clear. If he becomes part of a cabinet, then he will end up being the worst in that position in American history. I know it is a dramatic analysis to some, but I look at it as the complete truth. I think if Edwards does become Attorney General, then he will be the worst ever. Edwards and Obama share many policy differences. Obama is a corporate Democrat and Edwards is a fighter for actual people. Obama as president controls the show and will make Edwards do what he wants to do. So Edwards as Attorney General will not be what many people think. Edwards will not be able to prosecute these corporations like many think he can do because Obama will make sure otherwise. Edwards would only be a puppet to the president, which would make him insignificant and incompetent at the position.

That brings me to my third point. I think Edwards would be better doing independent things for people. For example, Edwards can make an organization to fight corporate greed. Edwards can make an organization to fight poverty all on his own. That way, Edwards can get done what he wants to get done to help people. As Attorney General and poverty czar, I promise you that will not be happening. However, doing this on his own can get his message across much more effectively.

Some still believe though that he would make a difference in an Obama White House. Someone in a group said he would be good in the White House and that we need a poverty czar in there instead of an independent organization. He basically said there that he thought Edwards would be the best for a cabinet job, but really isn't good at that subject on his own. That is utter hypocracy since he is saying he would not be good, but would be good at the same time. I did press him on that subject because I think he is wrong there. I believe we can get another poverty czar and Attorney General who will do a better job than Edwards. I deeply believe that.

In conclusion, these positions would be a big waste of time for Edwards. After all, this isn't going to happen, let alone would he be good at it. He is better on his own creating organizations to fight corporate greed and poverty. Actually, he could make two separate organizations at the same time, while he'd be only to do one of the two things in the White House. That means doing stuff independently makes him more useful than in the White House. That means if he would be in the White House, he would only be able to do half of what he could and wants to do. Therefore John, take my advice for once. Don't do it!

Thanks Sean for your support of Alonzo Mourning's Foundation and Edwards will likely be a cabinet member if Obama wins.
