Don't Diet: How This 54 Year Old Lost 30 Pounds in Two Months Without Trying
And My Blood Pressure is Now Normal
Some might think after reading my story that it was easy to become another thinner person, that my doctor scared me silly when he said my blood pressure was sky high - 220/ 120. It was a result of years of drinking coffee, eating junk food by the bag, sitting on my rump and not working out occasionally. And he said the extra weight was stressing my heart. And the reality was I am 54 years old and 100 lbs overweight but did not feel that bad. But I had to admit that I had no energy. I had been taking mega multi vitamins but they didn't help. I had not had any energy for many years.
He said I needed to change my life.
So I went home and thought about the weight loss programs I had been on the last 30 years: Akins, Duke Rice, Amino liquid, weight watchers, etc. and I noticed an interesting thing.
I noticed the type of eater I really was. Some of us only eat when necessary, some of us binge and purge and some of us eat to satisfy the inner thing that needs it even if that means 3000 calories or more a day.
I was a termite type of eater. That is, I tended to want to eat constantly once I started to eat on any given day. So the Atkins worked for a while with that style of eating but once I was off the inception stage I would gain the weight back again and then some more.
So I re-read all the information out there on dieting. It said to "Write down everything you eat and drink." Which didn't make me control my eating. The recommendations say to "Pay attention to what you are eating now and why. Identify the sources of your personal "hidden" calories" but it all didn't matter.
I found the easy answer with the help of the American Heart Association.
The American Heart association recommends we all eat right: they recommend a lifestyle of additional vegetables, fruits, lower fat meats, and some added bran. Sounds easy, right? And I like raisin bran cereal.
But we never really listen to the experts' recommendations do we?
So I started by adding fruits and vegetables into my life and removing the fried chicken, Doritos, ice cream and coffee I had been binging on.
I really didn't think it would help me. I was wrong.
Within 2 days I was not using both hands to help myself up my stairs. A few days past that I decided I would try to ride a bike again, my balance had been so bad for years that I had given it up. Now I get out of my home a few days a week and ride about 4 miles without being tired. I am sweaty from it but not totally exhausted.
I still have my bad eating habits and ravenous hunger but they work with my life choices for food.
I now binge on vegetables and fruit. One day last week I was so ravenous I ate a half of a big watermelon, 2 pears, 2 apples, 4 cans of vegetables, half a bag of microwave popcorn, half a liter of diet ginger ale and a few cooked turkey patties. The next day I was a half a pound lighter. (If I had eaten that much fried chicken and junk food I would have gained a pound or two at least.)
And some days I eat more vegetables and low fat meats than fruits. I notice that I now tend to eat almost the amounts a normal person would eat without starving. I still binge eat but I do not let it worry me. I have noticed it all balances out. And my doctor says I get my needed vitamins and minerals from the vegetables and fruit I eat.
I am 30 pounds lighter and my waist is 6 inches smaller.
Eating veggies and fruit now has changed my way of grocery shopping. Now I grab a papaya, lift a melon and think about the difference it all has made in my life.
I am happy. I have the energy I need now. I feel like a 20 year old but when I was 20 years old I never felt this good. My blood pressure is now down to 120/80 without any medicines.
