If you're living in a place now which is expensive but you can afford it, stay there. If you can't afford to pay for a security deposit and a first months rent you won't be able to move. Don't give a 60 day notice and then start looking for a place with bad credit. If nobody wants to let you move in because of your credit history then you will be completely homeless. The best thing to do is research into places that don't do credit checks. Perhaps they will call your past landlords to make sure that you always paid rent on time. If you have, then you'll be okay.
If you have resolved your credit issues you can get a letter from the companies stating that you have paid off what you currently owe. This will show the landlord that you care about taking care of debt. This means that you are better off than when you started out with bad credit. If you don't get accepted by this landlord keep looking around until you can find a landlord that doesn't do a credit check and only calls previous landlords.
When you only have a certain amount of money each month your main priority will be to pay the rent first. You don't want to end up homeless. People will always pay the rent before they pay anything else. There are many different places to rent in every city. You will eventually find a place that will let you rent even if you have bad credit. Some of these places will not do a credit check. Sometimes you will need a co-signer that will come in a sign the lease as well so that you can rent a place. If you don't pay the rent than the co-signer is obligated to pay the rent in place of you.
