Don't Get Fooled with Aromatic Oxygen Therapy

Heide Lynne Canlas
Today's fast-paced lifestyle brings health fads that purport to give benefits to individuals patronizing it. The bad news is, some of these health fads, while could be harmless, could even be harmful to one's health.

One of these health fads is aromatic oxygen therapy. This "therapy" works simply enough: individuals are given concentrated oxygen flavored with different scents like peppermint, wintergreen, cranberry, and lavender, among others. This concentrated oxygen supposedly works wonders for one's body, eliminating body aches and pains, to producing an overall feeling of well-being. Of course, all of these come at a fee.

With this therapy purporting to give health benefits, it is wise to examine and be wary. True enough, aromatic oxygen therapy is not as good as it seems. Oxygen coming from these bars comes from concentrators that filter out unwanted gases and produces purer oxygen. However, most concentrators only deliver 30 percent, not the promised 100 percent oxygen. Knowing that air contains 21 percent oxygen, it is a waste of money.

Most concerns about flavored oxygen come from scents that may or may not contain aromatic oils. In either case, inhaling these oils can inflame the lungs, causing pneumonia. For sensitive people, this may cause wheezing and shortness of breath. Contaminants present in the delivered "oxygen" can also cause infection. By-products of oxygen, called free radicals, can also damage lung tissues if given at high concentrations for prolonged periods of time. It might be useful to note that free radicals hasten cell death and is linked to cancer. As oxygen also helps the combustion process, smoking near these oxygen bars can pose grave danger.

In a time where evidence is needed to believe claims of health and well-being, it is useful, even life-saving, to examine these claims in the light of findings. As it seems, aromatic oxygen is baseless, and even harmful. Are you still trying aromatic oxygen?
