Don't Give Stone when One Wants Bread

T. Ramaswamy
There are large democracies with millions of people living in abject poverty. Here the leadership fails to give priority to uplifting them and to improve their economic conditions. The leaders who form the government are preoccupied with everything except that which will help to uplift the lot of the poor. Let us consider this with the basic needs of such people. This is presented in an imaginary interview a news correspondent (NC) has with the Government Spokesman (GS)
NC: Sir you say you are doing a lot for the poor. Let us take the basic needs. What have you done for food availability for the poor?
GS: Our government has asked for larger supplies from the Federal Government.
NC: How do you propose to reduce unemployment?
GS: We have schemes for export of manpower.
NC: What have you done for ensuring minimum clothing?
GS: We have asked the large textile mills to produce cheap cloth and supply to the government for distribution
NC: What is your contribution towards providing housing for the poor?
GS: The Insurance Companies have been asked to finance low cost houses
NC: How is your performance in providing basic education?
GS: We are creating awareness of distance learning by declaring and facilitating closure of educational institutions through obstructive tactics and methods
NC: What have you done for ensuring health of these unfortunate people?
GS: We have asked doctors to provide free medical service and health check up for these people.
NC: How do you ensure all these directives are carried out by the agencies?
GS: We have a built in mechanism for creating massive agitations which give rise to closure of shops and halt to economic activities at regular intervals so that the agencies are compelled to remember their responsibility.
NC: Sir, mere awareness is not enough. How can we really benefit the people?
GS: That is the task we leave to the next government. If we come to power we carry out what we have said. Otherwise we take over the role of agitators championing their cause.
NC: Are you not giving stone when people want bread?
GS: Yes. You know stone is more valuable than bread.
