Don't Knock Afroman

Ed Robbins
Lately, some people have been knockin' one of my favorite rappers, Afroman. Let me tell you, the guy is talented. He expresses the kind of talent that we all need in order to survive, and he does a lot to make a great many people feel good about things instead of bad. So that's why you should respect him.

Some people even go so far to say that he was a one hit wonder. Yeah right! These people haven't really listened to anything since "The Good Times" so they don't know.

They don't have to listen to his music, don't get me wrong, neither does anyone else. I'm perfectly cool with that. You tell me, though, anybody else who's producing dope music while our country's going down in flames. No one! Except maybe a few bands I know of, which I will keep secret.

But that's not the point. Afroman has kept it real, and has generally represented for the hood, and a lot of us other people, you know, college grads and others. The Fro' has probably had it tough lately, but basically, when people need to party, he can be counted on to do pretty well, and that's a lot more than many of the touring acts in America can say these days.

Why is the Fro's music so good? You might say. Well, try listening sometime when you're hanging out and having a good time and you might know. Or maybe, perhaps, even when you're not, but you just want to hear about just how it is in the tough parts of town. It's good music to listen to, when the job world let's you down, and you're thinking about how to turn things back into you're favor.

You'll hear about ghetto stories, sleepin' with the ladies, making deals and all kinds of things. He's generally appreciative of all his fans, so you can count on him not to be a complete jerk.

The dude's also got Southern and California roots. Apparently, he spent some of his time growing up in Mississippi, and has family roots there, but came to fruition outside L.A. in the town of Palmdale, CA. So, he's got some cool, southern cred, but also the Cali style as well.

It's not easy being a hustler, and Afroman will tell you about it. But, you know, he writes a lot of good, life affirming, songs as well. I'll tell you, he's one of the more in touch musicians of our time, and the thing is, he's completely chill! There's nobody really in his range, so he's cool with most of his contemporaries.

To hear some of his music, you can go to afromanmusic.com or go to youtube and check him out. Lots of his songs are loaded.

If you're just plain tired of the same old stuff coming out of the corporate world, or if you happen to take an interest in creative music based on real life experiences, check out Afroman. The dude's on tour, could be coming to a town near you.
