Don't Let Gangs and Southcenter Mall Shooting Destroy Westfield's New Businesses

Sheri Fresonke Harper
Tukwila, Washington - Southcenter Mall reopened their food court this summer along with a second aisle and second story of new clothing and businesses including jewelers, banks, sporting goods and restaurants. Shoppers can now dine at several fine restaurants including Blue C Sushi, Dukes Chowder House, BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, The Cheesecake Factory, and Joey's Grill and Lounge. I for one, said, "Thank Heaven, someplace new to dine." The second floor terrace has scads of seating and many favorites like Panda Express, Subway, Ivar's, Cinnabon that were available from before the construction project launched and many more. Westfield Southcenter Mall also offers movies at a new AMC Theatre. It's hard to believe a gang-related shoot could happen at Westfield Southcenter Mall. But it did.

When my husband and I dined there last weekend, we found Dukes Chowder House full and the mall quite busy. Duke's Chowder House has promoted their new store by offering free entrée coupons to people that join their mailing list. Westfield's Southcenter Mall was already decorated for Christmas and many businesses were having sales. Swarovskis is sponsoring several specials that are worth a look. This makes the idea of a shooting at Southcenter Mall worrisome that it will cause financial difficulties for all these new businesses .

I like the changes Westfield's has made to Southcenter Mall. They've added two parking garages, weekend valet service and a new gift card that can be used at any of the stores at Southcenter. With all the busy happy visitors glad to have the mall back for winter walking, security and Tukwila police have been less visible and I thought any signs of gang trouble disappeared . According to the Seattle Times, the shooting at Southcenter Mall Saturday, November 22 scared a lot of people. According to MyNorthwest.com and KiroTV the suspects were arrested.

According to a "Parent's Guide to Preventing Gangs" the first step in preventing such incidents starts at home. Parents should pay attention to their children, watching for signs their children are participating in gangs including : wearing colors or symbols, lowered school performance, using special hand signals, and carrying weapons. If you're a Washington parent, learn more about Seattle area gangs. Help prevent your child from entering a gang by talking with your child, helping your child identify with positive role models like many of the superheroes or someone in the community, and helping them with their studies. Don't let your child join a gang or be involved in a shooting at Southcenter Mall.

Tukwila also offers a recreation facility as does Renton to help keep teens interested in extra-curricular events. Westfield also has a King Country Library branch at Southcenter and offers internet access. Westfield's also offers a website that lists jobs at the mall. There's also a new skateboard park in Renton. These facilities are what youth need to keep them from participating in gang shootings like the one at Southcenter Mall.

It is a really sad thing that someone had to die because of gang behavior and another person injured in a shooting at a local shopping mall. It's worse that everyone at Westfield's Southcenter Mall had to be terrified for their own life. This isn't the first time that there's been a shooting at Southcenter Mall, read more. I hope everyone will continue to enjoy the new facilities at Westfield's Southcenter Mall. It was the first and largest mall in the area and I'm glad to see many of the changes Westfield has made.

I guess these shootings/gang activity can happen in any town or city. None of us are immune. It's very unfortunate... and things like this are happening more and more. However, it DOES all start in the home. Parents have to be more aware of what their children are doing!! Excellent article... and a very interesting read!!

Ah, parents paying attention to their kids... Let's hope this antique notion makes a comeback. Criminals (including gang members) have too much control. Good luck with the mall. All those shops sound tempting!

I used to work at the Southcenter Mall (Wet Seal) when I was a teen. I havent been there in ages but have noticed that that whole area has been really built up ( I love their new Nordstrom Rack). We hear about these mall shootings about once a year but when it hits your own mall, its even more mind-blowing. How utterly terrifying. But what can you do? Stay in your home forever? Great report.

My sister in law was at a Mall in Springfield, PA, years ago when a nutcase shot the place up. A woman yet! She has never again set foot in a Mall and I don't blame her!

I missed this. Malls in Cleveland now have super tight security because of crime and they are no longer a pleasure to shop at.

I heard about this in the news, thanks for the info.
