Finding out that your luggage has been lost can be very stressful. Don't lose your cool and follow these tips to help you retrieve your lost luggage. 90% of all luggage that is lost is returned to its owner. There are some things you can do before this happens to lessen your chances. Whether you're a frequent traveler or travel once every few years, losing your luggage is not a pleasant experience.

First and foremost, try and stay calm. Sometimes you may find your luggage on a different conveyor belt that what is posted. Other times, your luggage just may be delayed. Before you go to the counter, make sure that the conveyor is completely empty. Next, ask the attendant at the counter if they can check for your luggage. Remember to be polite and courteous despite your frustrations. They are there to help you.

If your luggage is still not found, leave your info at the counter and which hotel you will be staying at. Sometimes, your luggage will be delivered to your hotel within 24-48 hours. Make sure you file a claim before leaving the airport. You will probably have to make a list of everything that was in your suitcase and not all of it will be covered.

Another thing you need to do before you leave, is write down the name of the person you spoke with and any telephone numbers you need to contact the airline concerning your lost luggage. Also, make sure that you receive some sort of printed receipt of your claim with someone's signature and their airline ID number. Airlines can be very picky when passengers file a claim.

Take notice of how long your luggage has to be missing in order for it to be deemed "gone forever" and the airline has to reimburse you. All airlines have different policies. Each airline has different amounts and list of items that they will reimburse you for. Medications are hard to replace and best not to be in checked bags. These should be in a carry on with you.

For future reference, make sure that your bags are properly marked with updated information. Even print your information on the inside in case; your luggage tags are removed. If you can afford to do so, try and purchase a one of a kind set or brightly colored luggage. Pack all your valuables and medications in the carry on that you plan to take with you. You may also want to make a list of everything that is in your checked baggage and keep it on you.

When at the airport, remember to double check the ticketed tag on your bags to make sure that it matches your destination. Purchasing traveler's insurance is also an excellent idea. Packing an extra set of clothes in your carry bag might be a good idea, too.

All in all, even in this frustrating and disappointing time, try and make the best of it. Take this opportunity to let yourself buy some new clothes and have fun doing so. Take it in stride and don't let it ruin your vacation.
