The Best Mexican Food in Alpine

Alicia's at 708 E. Gallego in Alpine, Texas has some of the BEST food in the area. It has been an Alpine institution for students at Sul Ross State University and Alpine residents alike for many years.

What started out as a "burrito" Cafe has blossomed into a complete menu restaurant of some of the finest Tex-Mex I've ever had. In the original building of Alicia's 17 people would max out seating capacity of its 3 tables and 5 stools. Now, with a new addition to the original building, there are 3 six person booths and 3 tables with seating for 2.

The menu has expanded from breakfast burritos and burgers to include a range of Tex-Mex fare. However, one of my favorites remains the "Mexican Burger basket." This is a flour tortilla spread with refried beans, then a burger patty, specially shaped to fit the tortilla, is placed on top of the beans [with or without cheese]. This sumptuous combination is then topped with shredded lettuce [the kind found in tacos] and chopped tomatoes. It is accompanied by a generous order of fries.

The "nachos" are great as well, but they are made a bit differently. Instead of all the ingredients being piled on each chip, in this case a mound of tortilla chips is covered by meat

The breakfast burritos are Alicia's original menu items and the house specialties. The Chile Rojo and Verde are equally good. The fries included in some dishes as a side order are made from real potatoes, not from potato flakes, making them a delight for spud-lovers. Like many other Tex-Mex restaurants that are independent, rather than part of a chain, Alicia's has menudo on weekends.

If you're in the Alpine area, make time to go to Alicia's for breakfast or lunch. You won't be disappointed.
