Don't Miss a Beat: "Dancing with the Stars" Premier Recap

Kelly O'Neil
It's back with a vengeance. "Dancing With the Stars" returned to ABC on Monday with surprise, fanfare, lively hosts, amazing professionals, peppy music, celebrity characters, a few antics, and of course, dancing.

Did you miss the fun? Or were you blinded by the sensational sparkles and special effects? In either case, here is a quick review of day one of the three-day season premier.

Tom Bergeron started the evening by introducing his surprise substitute co-host, Drew Lachey (season two's winner). Samantha Harris was scheduled to co-host, but gave birth on Sunday, and so understandably missed the premier.

The pros were introduced in a lively performance that preceded the competition. The sharp group whirled around the stage with incredible skill and enthusiasm.

The ladies kicked off the season with a choice between the flirty Cha Cha Cha and the elegant Foxtrot.

First came the sweet tempered mother of three, Jennie Garth and her youthful looking, but very competitive partner Derek Hough. The two danced a good Cha Cha Cha, in response to which Judge Bruno Tonioli dubbed her a "yummy mommy". Besides the questionably flattering title, the dance earned the duo a twenty seven out of thirty.

Josie Maran came next in a stunning green dress. Her partner Alec Mazo took her to his own personal boot camp to try to get her in shape for dancing. Whether it worked or not is still unclear as the couple finished with a sixteen out of thirty on their Foxtrot.

Sabrina Bryan is paired with Mark Ballas. Sabrina told the audience she was "in it to win it", and Mark was confident too, referring to himself as a "dancing ninja". The two performed a fierce Cha Cha Cha that incorporated some hip-hop. Bruno called Sabrina a "bewitching blonde dynamo", but all three judges scolded the pair for bringing hip hop into a traditional Cha Cha Cha. Despite that, they received a twenty-six out of thirty (earning them in first place for the judges scores).

Marie Osmond and her partner Jonathqn Roberts performed next. Marie referred to herself as "single over forty-five with a lot of kids". The two performed a charming Foxtrot that earned them a twenty-one.

Melanie Brown paired up with the "bad boy of ballroom" himself, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Melanie wore a hot leopard print dress, and danced like a "feisty kitten" (Bruno's words). The pairs' Cha Cha Cha earned them a twenty-four.

Last, but definitely not least, came classy lady, Jane Seymour with professional Tony Dovolani. Jane was fulfilling a childhood dream by dancing again, and her Foxtrot was actually quite dreamy, earning a twenty-four.

The night was filled with good music, dancing, and fun. A few highlights included the opening montage which included lots of griping and quite a few tumbles, watching Drew adjust to life on the other side of the microphone, a shameless plug for the newest ABC show "The Bachelor" (who was in the audience), and the anticipation of another great season of competition. The men compete Tuesday, September 25th and the results show will be on Wednesday, September 26th.
