Ever since the movie "Stepford Wives" came out, I had repeatedly heard Mary Kay beauty consultants being compared to the women in this movie. It wasn't until recently after I watched the movie did I realize what people were referring to. Mary Kay beauty consultants are trained, or programmed, to act, dress and behave a certain way like the women in "Stepford Wives". The similarities in behavior and actions are amazing.
From time to time when I am out shopping I will run into women who used to be customers of mine or women I had met with and "facialed". I am a friendly person so I always smile and say "hi". I get upset sometimes because a lot of these women will try to avoid talking to me. Some have even went as far as turning and going in the opposite direction as soon as I say "hi". I just want to shout out, "Don't run away! I'm not the scary Mary Kay lady anymore! You're safe!"
My family even started avoiding me because they said I took on this I'm-better-than-you attitude as soon as I decided I wanted to make Mary Kay my career. Mary Kay directors and National Sales Directors are masters at manipulation. They are good at what they do and they know what buttons to push. They want their beauty consultants to stay away and avoid anyone who does not believe in the Mary Kay dream. Beauty consultants want to succeed so bad because of the rewards and prizes they are enticed with, they lose touch with reality. Many will put their families last in order to achieve a far-fetched dream that very few in the company ever realize. Many more find themselves in debt as they find out expenses outweigh profit.
Fortunately, I found my way out and my family and friends are happy to have the old me back - the me that does not look at people as dollar signs and as a career stepping stone. So the next time you see me at Walmart, don't run away. I am truly interested in how you are doing, not in what you can do for me.

Post a CommentMy wife is a VERY successful MK rep who also holds a full time corporate position in the energy industry. Her experience does not even come close to the negative, bitter, immature experiences you all describe here. Personally, I believe all of you just are jealous or afraid to work hard enough to make it happen for you. Go find something better to do besides write your garbage on here!
I have been a consultant for over five years and at first I was reluctant to sign up. My director was very unprofessional in her business practices. So I found a new director and went inactive for one year and signed up under her. She is the most graceful person I have ever met. She is not pushy and doesn't demand sell - sell - sell. She does not teach you to stalk your customers and or over order inventory. She has been a director for 35 years and is 62 years old and looks 40.
I am proud to be associated with Mary Kay. I am sorry so many people have had bad experiences, I wish they all had my director.
buying makeup a good use of my time when I need to be studying. She literally did not let anyone leave the room until we signed a contract for selling MK! It was almost 10pm and the other women and I kept saying how our husbands and children would be getting worried. She didn't care at all. She just wanted those contracts. I hastily filled in the name and address and left all the payment info blank. I told her I still had to think about it and dashed for the door. I left completely pissed off. She turned a fun girl's night into a horrendously overbearing sale for herself. I definately will NEVER be going back there or buying MK again (except online). I can see exactly why MK has the horrible reputation that it does.
Here's my story: I recently met a MK lady who invited me to a free facial. I went, and there were 3 other women there as well. I made it very clear I didn't have money to spend. My MK lady was really nice, and she wasn't pushy, and worked with the low budget I had to buy a few products. BUT THEN...when we were finished the director came into the room. She sat us down and kept insisiting she would only need 5 minutes of our time (when was actually over half an hour!) to talk to us about "marketing". What she really did was tell us about selling MK. I repeatedly told her I was NOT interested, and that as a full time student I rely on my full time job for a steady paycheck for school expenses. With being in school and working, I don't have any free time and really do not want to take on another responsibility. She basically ignored every word I said. She insisted that being busy was great because I see people I can sell to all the time. I told her I did not find talking strangers into buy
I am on here to vent because I ran into two of these representatives and I find their tactics insulting and pushy. They love to point out your flaws and offer products that will "help" it.
I can spot these blood thirsty hounds a mile away now, as they love to frequent anywhere people may stop to take their time in doing something. For example: malls, grocery stores, parks, etc.
They walk slowly and you can see them scouting out anyone who may be within their vicinity for at least two minutes or if they catch you making eye contact. I let one rep have it and told her politely to back off and if I was interested, I know how to get on the net to buy.
What I should do is point out their flaws and ask them if they have any products that could help them because then they can be a walking, talking testimonial for all to see LOL.
I really think stores should wise up and boot any of these folks who even think to open their mouths to harass their customers. I would love to see one kicked
My next door neighbour is an MK consultant and for over a year now she has been hounding me to work for them, too. She's always trying to flog me stuff - the only time she 'phones or drops by is to ask me - again - if I would like to order something. I now try to avoid her, and usually rush indoors if I see her coming when I'm outside gardening. I am at my wits' end. I told her months ago that I was not interested in buying anything and if I changed my mind I would contact her. I find her pestering ways absolutely infuriating but what can I do - she lives next door! It's very awkward, but short of being rude I can't think what to do, even though what she's doing is rude. :-(
Just thought I'd give an update. My "friend" is no longer considered friend. She stopped coming around, calling and texting. Only time I hear from her or see her is when she wants something. MK is all she talks about, yet she cant get a single sale. Now she pawns her kid off to anybody, claiming she needs the time to work on her "business". Shame on you Mary Kay Corp. Your nothing more than a soul sucking business who needs to be put out of its misery. I lost a good friend because of your brainwashing antics...but you don't care...you got her money out of it.
I am a husband of a MK consultant. After seven years of MK we have split up.She never achieved her car, director status etc. I spent alot of money and time and for me this MK is BS. She is blind to our reality and I can't get her to see that. I feel sorry for her and to bad that her director CAN'T tell her a "hey look your really not making what you were earning as a school teacher, maybe this isn't your bag, this isn't worth losing your family" because that wouldn't be "positive". This MK thing has ruined my marraige. Believe me I have heard it ALL. The worst GOD 1st,(which I believe), family 2nd, career 3rd. She is not putting our family 2nd. FYI she left me and blames me for not being "positive". I have the debt to prove it.
Beware...If you do it right without putting inventory on a credit card, you should be fine. Who cares if you don't have their stuff right then and there. I went almost 10K in debt on credit cards with inventory. I WAS SO DUMB!!!! My director was pushy!!
Recently a good friend of mine started selling MK. I never liked this stuff because its over priced and I can buy the same things at the local Walmart. Ever since my friend became a MK rep its been nothing but constant guilt trips and pushy attempts, she even tried using my 10 yr old daughter as a good reason why to buy their teen line stuff. My sister is treated the same way and now she runs from my friend. It got to the point I had to get mean and hurt her feelings about this MK stuff and it still doesn't stop. The MK Company should be ashamed of itself. Sadly my friend is going to learn the hard way and lose more friends before she catches on to the MK scam.
