With that said-we realize that Christmas no longer embraces the gift of family and happiness, being thankful for what we have and who is in our lives. Sadly, it has come to represent to mean going into debt or having to forego getting someone something due to lack of funds. Alas, it is now known as one of the most stressful times of the year!
By allowing ourselves to get caught up in the commercialism of Christmas we open ourselves up for undue stress. Some people will find themselves applying for a loan either prior to Christmas to purchase all of those gifts they feel inclined to buy, or within the month of January to help pay the bills. We've been brought up to live day to day, and in doing so events such as Christmas bring us to a point of going deeper into debt.
However, if we think outside of the box and begin approaching things a little differently, we can retrain our old habits. Christmas doesn't have to be a time to stress out over money. The key is to start planning now.
When shopping for Christmas, keep watch for bargains. For instance, retail stores have clearance sales throughout the year. Be mindful of the names on your Christmas list, and when you come across a good deal-grab it up. You may be surprised at what savings you're willing to find.
If you need to buy for kids, second hand stores are great. Since kids grow so fast, you can find toys and clothes in great condition for a fraction of the normal cost. If you don't have a nice second hand store in your area, then I would suggest checking out online auction sites, such as eBay to find deals on used items.
Another great idea would be homemade goods since they make such great gifts and can be very fun to make. Plus, you can even get the whole family involved in creating them. There are many ideas for this from cookies, festive breads, candles or handmade soaps. These are all simple and very economical. Let your creativity soar.
