Don't Tell Me "Happy Holidays": My View on Political Correctness

WriteOnMom
By far I am not the most religious person on the planet. I have beliefs that I stand by whole-heartedly, and I enjoy most of the "real" holidays with my immediate family and friends. However, please do not tell me Happy Holidays!

When did it become politically correct to say Happy Holidays, instead of Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa? Of course there are a few more I could throw into the mix, but I have covered the 3 most celebrated of the holiday season.

It drives me absolutely insane to hear Happy Holidays! Why does this bother me you may wonder? Well, the main thing is although it is the holiday season and Happy Holidays will cover pretty much any and all holidays associated with the season, it makes more sense to say Merry Christmas and so on. If someone does not celebrate Christmas but instead they celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa it can easily be stated, "Thank you, but I celebrate (insert holiday)", or like years gone by smile and say thank you, same to you and yours.

How anyone can be offended by someone wishing them a happy season, and wishing them a happy season in the manner that has been the "norm" for years and years is appalling. Society has become to politically correct over some of the most ridiculous things. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or Happy Kwanzaa is not offensive, it is not something that should offend most human beings. Be that as it may, more and more people are taking to saying Happy Holidays!

While we're on the topic of Christmas, did anyone see the news story about store Santa's being asked to say "Ha, Ha, Ha" instead of "Ho, Ho, Ho"? Read this article from Yahoo News to see what I am talking about from officials in Sydney. This is another ridiculous idea. If "Ho, Ho, Ho" is going to offend any woman then I am completely believing that it will only offend those that fall under the new urban meaning of the word "ho".

As kids ourselves did you ever say to yourself "Santa said, Ho, Ho, Ho, that is just offensive!"? I seriously doubt it! Do those of you that celebrate Christmas and let your children believe in Santa honestly sit and think in depth about how offensive store Santa's are going to be by saying "Ho, Ho, Ho"? Or do you feel that it is apart of the holiday that you choose to celebrate? I am leaning more toward the fact that most people, women, men, and children are not going to be offended by the Ho, Ho, Ho!

Are some of the most celebrated children books of our time going to be re-written to reflect Santa as saying "Ha, Ha, Ha" instead of "Ho, Ho, Ho"? People get over the politically correct notions when it comes to holidays. There is a time and place to be PC but leave holidays alone already!

To all of you reading this, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa! I hope each and everyone of you and your families have a wonderful season and many, many more seasons to celebrate together.

Happy Holiday does not offend people, and believe me with over 3000 clients to send my Holiday wishes too, many do get offended if i don't know their exact religious beliefs. Happy Holidays is a (safe) and friendly way to wish clients the best over their celebrated holiday.

Interesting article. "Happy Holidays" is not something I ever heard in the UK. It is the specific holiday that is mentioned. I do not celebrate any of these holidays, but when someone greets me, I usually just smile in return or say "thank you", as they usually mean well.

I will only say Merry Christmas also.

I've said this before but~ Christmas is a religious observance so by definiton it is not "PC". It's ridiculous to put a religious holiday into the political realm.

Greta article! I also prefer "Merry Christmas" or Merry whatever to Happy Holidays. If I don't celebrate the holiday mentioned in the merry wishing, it does not matter. What's the big deal? As for the Santa thing, my husband and I laughed at that one when we saw it on the news. Come on. If you are going to get offended over Santa, you've got a bigger problem. Perhaps that's a sign someone's in some dire need of the laughter and cheer Santa represents. :-)
