Just outside of downtown Cedar Rapids, on the north east side of town, more specifically, located at 4307 Center Point Rd N.E., is a small donut shop named Donutland. The name conjures up a funland image doesn't it? It truly is. For the donut lover this is the place to go. Donuts are made fresh all day long and they create every taste from peanut covered, to Bismark's, to long-johns. Apple fritters are full of fruit and the almond-peanut chocolate covered donut is a delectable delight. (Did I tell you about the chocolate old-fashioned?)
Ah, but donuts are not all they make at Donutland. There is a deli in this quaint shop that offers fresh sandwiches such as chicken salad croissants, turkey subs with all the trimmings, fresh soup, bar-b-que beef and tuna to name a few of the offerings, also made fresh daily. A sandwich combo also includes a donut of choice - how can you beat that?!
Breakfast sandwiches of egg, sausage and cheese on bagels or croissants are better than any offered at a fast food restaurant chain. Donutland has great fresh coffee, single cup or by the 2 l/2 cup pot. Their hours are great, open 5 a.m. Monday thru Friday, and 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, until 10 every night, (remember fresh donuts are made all day long). One has to try the cherry donuts, or the jelly filled Bismark's, add a crueler for extra measure! A dozen donuts is going to run you about $7.00, depending on any specialty items you may add, i.e. muffins, fritters, even bagels. (The back wall displays about 40 different creations.)
Saturdays the deli closes early in the afternoon, usually around 2 or 3 p.m. to help them prepare for the 3500 + donuts that will be made for the Sunday bunch. Church orders begin to stack up on the counter throughout the night, as well as orders for local businesses and families. Although they do not accept credit cards, cash is always welcome!
Donutland use to have a few more locations throughout Cedar Rapids, but now the one on Center Point Road is the only location. There is a steady stream of customers, but there is always room for one or two more. Tables are frequently pulled together and filled with teens enjoying a donut or sandwich, or groups with casual meetings. Families find donut land welcoming and the kids love the fresh donut holes.
Pull up, walk in and join the locals! This writer promises you won't be disappointed, and you will soon become a regular.
