Doomsday Clock Moved Back 1 Minute

An Update

The minute hand of the Doomsday Clock moved back 1 minute today, Thursday, January 14th. The clock has moved from 5 minutes before midnight to 6 minutes before midnight. According to livescience.com, 'in moving the clock...scientists expressed optimism for humanity's future'.

According to the scientists, nation's leaders are cooperating and reducing their nuclear weapon arsenals and securing their nuclear bomb-making materials. Also, countries are pledging to limit climate-changing emissions.

The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic clock face, was created in 1947 during the Cold War. It's been maintained by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. Changes to the clock are decided by the bulletin's directors, after consulting with a board of sponsors.

In the beginning, the Clock showed seven minutes to midnight. It began as a representation of how close we were to a global nuclear war, but lately has included climate changes and developments in life sciences and nanotechnology. As the clock gets closer to midnight, the world gets closer to global disaster.

The Clock has changed 18 times since the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in 1947. The closest it has been to midnight was in 1953, with only 2 minutes to midnight, when the US and the Soviet Union were testing thermonuclear devices within nine months of each other. The Clock changed last in January 2007, when the minute hand was pushed forward two minutes to five minutes before midnight. The board made the move due to two dangers, 27,000 nuclear weapons with 2,000 ready to launch and the destruction of habitats due to climate change.

The news conference announcing the change occurred this morning, January 14th, at the New York Academy of Sciences Building in New York City. They used a representation, as the clock is actually located at the Bulletin of Atomic Sciences office in Chicago, Illinois.

I think of this clock as being something of an anachronism.
