Doomwalker: A Kitten's Tail

Kena Lea
He was black on white and ever so bright.
He could hide in a teacup right in sight.
He had a tiny fingertip for a paw
and flexing teeth in a little gaping maw.

He was not much larger than a mouse
and yet he managed to fill my house.
There was love and tenderness and care
and so much more yet to spare.

The others grew up so fast
but he held out; tiny to the last.
I fed him with my own hand
this love was so unplanned.

I gave him a name as big as a star
because he was the smallest by far,
a name as opposite his personality
as the colors on this kitty.

His heart was huge as were his eyes,
so wide and full of surprise.
He hopped and jumped and ran
and once fell asleep inside a can.

He sat on my shoulder looking down
at the other kittens on the ground.
He made me laugh and smile,
with his tiny kittenish wiles.

He slept on my pillows
purrs whispering like willows.
Snuggled warmly against my skin
my itty bitty tigerish friend.

In my heart now is where he plays,
with all his silly little ways.
And I will pass through these days
and remember forever his short stay.

Maybe that's why the "runts of the litter" have always been my favorite...it seems the smaller they are, the larger their capacity to love and be loved. I'm sorry you had to lose him, but I'm glad you had the chance to love him. Welcome to AC :)

Welcome to AC! I love the poem. Animals become such an important part of the family if we let them. Sorry about your loss. He sounds like a precious little kitty.

Thank you guys. Now, his memory will last not just in my heart but yours too, and that makes me so proud of him.

I loved it. Maybe its because I'm an animal lover. Maybe because cats are my favorite of all. Or maybe its because I can relate to what you've said in a personal way. Thanks for sharing. Keep submitting and keep us posted.
