Door County, Wisconsin

When I was a kid growing up in Wisconsin, my father would take me to Door County. He always called it the thumb of Wisconsin for the obvious reason, it looks like a thumb. It is a peninsula on the Western shore of Lake Michigan. The peninsula is over 70 miles long and almost 10 miles wide. There is so many places to visit of historic value in the area. Maritime Museums to State Parks, Wineries, Cherry and Apple orchids. You will see breath taking views of probably the largest fresh water lake in the world Lake Michigan. Bring your binoculars to watch as ocean going vessels traverse the dangerous waters of the lake. Lake Michigan has swallowed many large ships over the years. You may have heard the song the legend on Gichahumi, written about a November storm that sunk a huge ship while crossing the lake. In the late fall the lake can have some violent wind storms.

We found the food in Door County to be very good, plenty of roadside stores selling apples, plums, cherries, honey and other Wisconsin delights. You can even buy cheese. From my experiance Wisconsin has some of the best honey, apples and cherries that I have had any where. Just to name a few things that grow there pretty consistently. You will also find some of the finest produce in the country in Wisconsin. Many farmers have been practicing organic farming in the state and the quality of the produce during the season is very high. Most of the prices for produce in season are also very reasonable.

When visiting Door County you will find many small fishing villages that seem to look like they are on the ocean but you are on the Lake Michigan shore line. Plenty of activities to choose from from sight seeing golfing. Door county has ten light houses and 5 state parks. Because of the areas beauty many artists live in the county. There is no shortage of art galleries. You may also enjoy taking the ferry to Washington Island, a great day trip. It is no wonder that Door County county has been named one of the top 10 vacation destinations of the USA more than once.
