The appeal is with the normal-sized female clerk played by improv comedy actress and instructor Stephanie Lesh-Farrell. At first, I didn't like her because she has the attitude of most store clerks, that "I don't wannabe here" attitude.
I warm up after the first scan of her male customer's Doritos and by the second scan, I find her and her pigtails adorable. Maybe it's because I'm sick of seeing skinny, airbrushed women all over the place and I find "Check Out Girl" refreshing. In an odd way, she reminds me of the Betty Suarez character in "Ugly Betty," a down-to-earth normal gal.
What makes this entertaining is the way "Check Out Girl" adds her own commentary while scanning the different bags of Doritos. She realizes there's a connection with her moustache-clad customer by his choice in snacks. With each scan, her commentary becomes flirtier, sassier and bolder.
"Nacho Cheese," she says while pointing at him. "Old school."
Next is a bag of Fiery Habanero followed by Salsa Verde. Things really begin to spice up as "Check Out Girl" purrs a little "grrrr" to the customer. He growls back and she jumps a bit startled.
Doritos Blazin' Buffalo Ranch is the final bag to escalate the heat between "Check Out Girl" and the customer. Giddy up!
The final scene shows "Check Out Girl" with hair out of place reaching from behind the checkout counter for a microphone. She's calling for a cleanup. You go girl!
Kristen Dehnert wrote and directed "Check Out Girl," which was the only female-directed video to make the final five. According to the "Check Out Girl" blog, she apparently quit her day job and spent her savings to make this and three other commercials for the competition. Out of the four, "Check Out Girl" made the contest's final five.
According to the "Crash the Super Bowl" Web site, five finalists would be awarded $10,000 and a trip to Miami to participate in a private Super Bowl party. It also stated only the winning commercial would be aired during the big game. The site declares the video titled "Live the Flavor" the winning commercial (which aired during the game's first quarter), but certainly Doritos has room for two winners.
Either way, this was a winning Super Bowl commercial and I have two words for Ms. Dehnert and her team. Giddy up!
