Dorm Decor: Bright Pink & Chalkboard Accent Table

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Chalkboard accent pieces have become a popular trend in home decor. This fun bright pink and chalkboard accent table project is great for a teenage bedroom or stylish college dorm room.

For this project, you will need (per accent table):

- One small unfinished wooden accent table or refurbished wooden accent table
- Several sheets of medium and/or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon
- Krylon Chalkboard Paint in Black
- Ruler
- Masking tape
- Craft paper
- Piece of chalk
- Paper towels
- Newsprint and/or a large sized drop cloth

Find an area to work in that is well ventilated. Cover the space with either a large drop cloth or several sheets of newsprint. Carefully sand down the exterior of the wooden accent table with medium or fine grit sandpaper sheets. Use a soft or tack cloth to remove and dust from the table created by sanding.

Apply a thick coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White to the table. Once the primer has dried completely, paint the table with several thick coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon. Dry fully before continuing on with the project.

Use a ruler to determine a one inch border around the outside of the tabletop. Cover this border, plus the legs and sides of the table, with masking tape and craft paper. (This will leave an exposed square exactly one inch smaller all around than your tabletop.)

Spray the exposed area with eight to ten coats of Krylon Chalkboard Paint in Black. Keep adding coats of paint if the pink below still shows through. Let the chalkboard area dry for a day or so before proceeding. Take the edge of a piece of chalk and cover the entire amount if chalkboard space. (This will cure the chalkboard paint.) Wipe away the chalk from the surface with a dry paper towel.

Remove all tape and craft paper from the table and enjoy your new creation.

TIP: Any bright colored paint can be used in lieu of the bright pink color. Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gum Drop, Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Banner Red and Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Bright Idea are all excellent color options. Also, consider tying a small piece of chalk to the table leg with ribbon for an extra special touch.
