Dorm Room Etiquette

What Violates the Roommate Relationship?

Nick Thomas
Recently, Tufts University made it against their rules to have sex in a dorm room while your roommate is present (unless you are having sex with your roommate I would assume). It seems to me that, as a species, we have sunk pretty low if we have to put a rule like this on the books. Some college students might have something going on where their roommate wants to be in the room but that's behind closed doors and those roommates aren't complaining. This interesting new rule made me think about what else should be taboo in a dorm room that hasn't been written in to law.

Throwing Up

We all know that the average college student does a little too much drinking. When the homework is done, and maybe even if it isn't, the local bars are the place to be. Go ahead and have a good time, but if you overdue it have the common courtesy to pass out in the dorm bathroom instead of in your bed, your roommate's bed, or on the floor. This way when you throw up you and the room can be easily cleaned and you aren't stinking up the living area.

No Animals

I get it; you're far from home and miss your kitty or hamster or, worst case scenario, your snake. That doesn't mean it is OK for you to sneak them into the dorm room. Let's face it, they smell, they are dirty and they may make a lot of noise. Not only does your roommate not miss your kitty, he or she probably doesn't want to wake up with it trying to suck out their soul like cats are known to do.

Spare Underwear

So you have a bid date and haven't done your laundry in a while? No, it is not ok to sneak into your roommates drawers to grab a pair of your roommate's drawers. Man up and go without, you're probably not going to get anywhere with her anyway, if you haven't done your laundry in a while what does that say about how your personal hygiene must be!

Sharing Isn't Always OK

When you use someone else's toothbrush it's not sharing because they probably don't know you're doing it. It's a really disgusting thing to do and besides, you probably just contracted the swine flu.

So, if you are going to be spending the next few months in a dorm room and get any ideas that you aren't sure about give them the common sense check before you go ahead and do something taboo. And for God's sake, ask your roommate to step out for a little while if you are going to have sex!
