Dorm Room Themes and Decorations

Cool New Dorm Ideas

Most college students will tell you that decorum is VERY important. I am a college student, and I have seen some extraordinary dorm rooms and some down-right pathetic rooms. Most of the best looking dorm rooms have a semblance of some kind of theme.

The theme depends on the student and his or her tastes. You can try to decorate a room totally in posters, creating a music themed room. Bob Marley and Pink Floyd are great posters to start with. You could take this idea a bit farther and have a movie themed room using movie posters.

Some more practical ideas are door decorations. Beads hanging down from the top of the door, like the kind in a fortune teller booth, are very nice and add a sort of intrigue to the room. Christmas lights are cool touch too. Just hang them all around the room for extra lighting and color. Strobe lights are cool too.

If you don't like the ugly bland curtains that come with your dorm room, take them down and replace them with colorful shower curtains. You can get these at Target or Walmart. They come in many colors and are a wonderful way to spruce up that boring room. Flags are also a wonderful, cheap way to liven up a room. Any type of flag will do and they are very functional.

In a dorm room, space is pretty important, because there just isn't much of it to go around. In most cases, you have a roommate, so you have to conscious of space. Ask your roommate if it's ok to decorate the entire room and see if he/she is willing to help.

For the contemporary college student, an iPod is a necessity. I really like the iPod stereos that are available now. You can connect an iPod to a port on the stereo and the music will play from it. This is a great idea for iPod lovers and they don't need a separate stereo system. And they are small and compact.

You should consider getting a new desk lamp. The lamps that are provided by the school are usually old and unsightly. A flexible light is a good idea. For those that have lofted beds, a bedside lamp is another good idea. In fact, a loft basket is great for putting glasses or lotion in. You can pick up the lamp and the basket at a Target or Walmart too.

A room is supposed to be a reflection of the decorator's personality and imagination, so just run with it. Let your imagination run wild. When you do that, you might come across a look for your room you will love, and a room that all your friends will envy.

  • Use your imagination; It's ok to be daring and different.
  • Make it YOUR room. Remember, you're living there for about 8 months.
The average student spends $35 a year on posters.
