Dos Equis: The Most Interesting Beer in the World

Aziza Shumba
One day as I was sitting at home watching TV I noticed a few commercials with a bearded man in his fifties known as the most interesting man in the world. The commercial I saw showed the younger version of him first bench-pressing two Asian nurses, then arm wrestling communists, trapping a wild grizzly bear, and catching a massive swordfish on a speedboat with a beautiful woman by his side. It then cuts back to the older version of the fearless adventurer surrounded by gorgeous women.

This scene was accompanied by the quote "The police often question him just because they find him interesting. His beard alone has experienced more than a lesser man's entire body. His blood smells like cologne. He is the most interesting man in the world". After each commercial, his signature sign off is "Stay thirsty my friends". There are many more advertisements that included in the collection. Now usually, I am no victim to advertising. Okay, usually I am...but this time was a little different than others. I felt the absolute need to go out and purchase the beer immediately.

Although it did not happen immediately, I did eventually get around to trying Dos Equis Lager Style. Now prior to this, I have tried Corona Extra. That would complete my compilation of Mexican beers. I took one sip and soon realized the difference. If I had to use one word to describe Dos Equis, I would say "smooth". It has some similar flavor notes as Corona, but overall, it is completely different. It has a very refreshing, light and crisp taste. Now for all of you non-beer drinkers looking to try something not too harsh, this is the beer for you. It is a beer that is actually very easy to drink. You don't even realize it's going down until you are staring at an empty bottle. The taste is not sweet but unlike Corona, it's not that bitter. Therefore, I feel like this drink could escort any delectable meal with ease.

So am I a victim of advertising? Well let's think about it, a victim can be defined as an unfortunate person who suffers from some adverse circumstance. I bought, drank, and enjoyed the smooth malty tastes of Dos Equis feeling extremely refreshed and satisfied afterwards. So can this be categorized as unfortunate? I definitely don't think so. At a favorable price for an import, I'd had to agree with our bearded friend when he says "I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis".

Dos Equis means "two X's". On the bottle label is a face of Moctezuma, a 16th century Aztec ruler who was defeated by Hernan Cortes.
