Double M and The Galaxy Warrior: Some of the Oddest Boxing Nicknames Ever

Stephy B
There's no doubt that boxing nicknames are sometimes more notorious than the fighters themselves. From Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield to "Sugar" Ray Leonard, there are some great nicknames out there. However, with the good come the bad and ugly. Here is my personal take on the top five worst boxing nicknames in history.

1).Michael "Double M" Moorer-Couldn't former heavyweight champion Michael Moorer think of anything better than his initials? Nicknames should be something to be feared, what is there to be feared of something that a five year old could figure out?

2). Eric "Butterbean" Esch- This former World Super-Heavyweight Champion, known for his American flag trunks and heavy weight (416 pounds) should be known as something that conveys his size or shiny bald head. All Butterbean reminds me of is something greasy and fattening, which could be deadly but does not scream menacing in the ring.

3). Nate "The Galaxy Warrior" Campbell- This WBO lightweight champion sounds more like an alien than an esteemed fighter, and not in a out-of-this world awesome kind of way. Sure, a warrior is great, but why a galaxy warrior? This just sounds too much like a villain in Star Wars.

4).Owen "What the Heck" Beck- Really, couldn't this professional Jamaican boxer find anything else that rhymed with Beck? Even "I'll break your neck" would have been an improvement over this disastrous nickname. Instead of his nickname making him intimidating, it makes it seem like he doesn't know what the heck is going on, which is not a good thing in a sport where speed, agility and instinct are necessary.

5). Darnell 'Ding-A-Ling Man' Wilson-This former United States Amateur Light middleweight champion may be known for his ability to end a fight, but a nickname based on a bell is not exactly catchy or impressive. Honestly, it just reminds me of elementary school.

These nicknames are just a few of many bad ones. Honorable mentions include: Andrew "powerful pole" Golota, Francois "The White Buffalo" Botha and Juan "El Pollo" Valenzuela.
