OK, if this is what we as Christians believe, then how can any of us (Christians) believe that the dinosaurs and many trees and plants, as well as other creatures, were here millions and billions of years ago? Wouldn't this make us double-standard Christians?
This question arose in my mind today as my family and I toured the Florrisant Fossil Beds National Monument. One of the rangers were explaining a trail to me that you can walk and see the different years, (or something like that), we did not walk that trail, so I am not sure what we might have seen, but the ranger said for ever inch you walk, it equals a million years. She said that it was really neat to walk it and see what transpired over so many millions of years.
I am Christian, and the type of person that if you contradict what I know as fact from the Bible, I am going to correct you! So I politely told this ranger that I was a Christian, and from a Christians perspective, I did not believe the earth was more than 10,000 years old at most. Then the shocker came, her words just about floored me. She looked at me, almost as if I had insulted her, and said, "I am a Christian"! I had no idea how to react to this rangers comment. So I just looked at her and shook my head.
I don't get it at all. How can someone say that they are a Christian, then say that they believe the earth is millions of years old? Wouldn't that make them a double-standard Christian?
God makes Himself very clear in the Bible as to how old the earth is, how He created it, and how we are supposed to live on it. Why are we always so determined to change His word? Why are so many Christians so willing to believe what science shows, instead of believing in what God wrote? An elder of a Church we were members of in Indiana once said, "what was science 20 years ago, is laughable today"! There is so much truth in those words, and we see it all the time.
Here is a question for you... If the petrified redwoods are so many millions of years old, why then are the outsides of some of the ones located in the fossil beds in Florissant, Colorado, still wood on the outside, and top, and not stone? I used my cane to get a tiny piece of what had fallen off the top and sides of one of the huge redwoods, and carefully examined it. The piece I looked at was still wood! So how then can these have fossilized millions of years ago? Seriously, think about.
Do you believe what God says, that the earth is less than 10,000 years old, or do you believe what the scientists say, that the earth is millions and billions of years old? As Christians, we need to make sure we are following God's words and His laws, not what scientists "think."

Post a CommentI believe that it was closer to 6000 years. Pretty much everyone knows that I am a young earther. I do not believe in evolution, at least anything other than macro-evolution, and I do not believe in gap theories. I believe that it was told to us just like it happeded. Although, there may be some additional stuff that we just did not need to know. Great article! Tough subject because you not only offend athiest, but also those that claim Christianity, but do not fully believe everything.
...and this is why I'm an agnostic. Great article and well written. Thanks for sharing!
Great article. Thanks for the information. Contrary to popular belief, I was not there immediately following the foramtion of the earth so the question is still up for grabs.
A very thought provoking piece Carmella. After many years of trying to set the record straight on lots of peripheral issues, God smacked me one day and said, "Hello, are you there?" He politely told me not to fret over things like when the earth was formed or if every Christian should speak in tongues, or even if the Antichrist is on the scene. He told me I need to be about the business of worshiping Him and telling others how marvelous He is. It's hard to argue about non-essential issues when you're talking about His unconditional love and amazing grace. :)
