Dove Desserts: Tiramisu - Product Review

Tina Twito
I seem to be drawn to things with "Tiramisu" in the name. And now that I've had a chance to try the real deal at an Italian restaurant, that hasn't changed. So when I saw the Tiramisu flavor of "Dove Desserts" at Wal-Mart, I ignored the price tag and gave them a try.

The Tiramisu flavor of "Dove Desserts" comes in a tall 5.8 ounce paper box decked out in rich browns, caramels, and yellows. The full description in the corner is "Tiramisu Silk Smooth Dark Chocolate Promises" Towards center, there is a small image of a slice of Tiramisu desert, a square chocolate in a caramel colored wrapper, and an unwrapped dark chocolate which is broken into and dripping out its caramel colored filling. I love dark chocolate and caramel, so this looked enticing. I was also curious as to how they would interpret the Tiramisu dessert.

The outer shell of the Tiramisu flavor of "Dove Desserts" is rich and sufficiently dark, with the melt away smoothness of all of Dove's "Promise" line (this is just a fancier incarnation). Inside, the caramel filling is thick and buttery-rich, playing nicely off an infusion of coffee flavoring. While it lacks the mouth feel of real Tiramisu (I was hoping for something cake-like) it captures the high points of its flavor nicely.

Now for the bad news that always comes with this kind of treat. A single serving of 5 chocolates has a whopping 200 calories, and 35 percent of your daily-recommended value of saturated fat. There are some slight positives. You get 2 percent of your daily-recommended value of calcium, and 4 percent of your daily-recommended value of iron, along with 8 percent of your daily-recommended value of dietary fiber, and 2 grams of protein. However, this hardly makes an argument for the Tiramisu flavor of "Dove Desserts" as a healthy food.

The Tiramisu flavor of "Dove Desserts" is a good treat for chocolate lovers. It is dark enough to appeal to dark chocolate lovers, but not so dark as to test the palate of those who prefer milkier fare. I also always enjoy reading the little words of wisdom inside the wrappers of Promises. While you won't get smarter reading them, they are often clever, funny, or sweet. (Though occasionally they are just trying to get you to buy more Dove chocolates!) So, while I can't recommend the Tiramisu flavor of "Dove Desserts" as an everyday food, I definitely recommend it as a treat to try.

Enjoy!
