Dove's Men + Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Bar, a Review

Is This Premium Priced Soap Worth a Buck a Bar?

Kent Hadley
I have been a loyal Ivory Soap user for many years. The only problem with Ivory is that it does not last very long. I decided to try the Dove brand and purchased the new Dove's Men +Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Bar.

A package of six bars cost me $5.99 or almost a buck a bar at my local Walgreens store. I could have purchased a twelve pack of Ivory for the same price. So for the Dove to be better or equal in price, each bar has to last twice as long.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box is a strong odor. The fragrance is similar to what my second grade teacher, Miss Itten used to drench herself with each day before class. Fifty-five years later I still have that odor imprinted on my brain. The bar is the typical Dove shape, oval and curved. I find this shape hard to hold onto in the shower and prefer a square bar. The shape may be good for a bath tub.

The Dove + Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Bar is hard to work up a lather with. Further, the more you work the bar the more intense the odor becomes. I will need to install a stronger vent fan to continue this test. The bar does get off the dirt and sweat even after a session of gardening so that is in its favor.

I shower frequently in the summertime when I garden, and spend time outside working on projects. A bar of Ivory would last me about ten showers. The Dove bar lasted for fifteen showers. So the economy is not there. Further the Dove bar left my skin feeling greasy and unclean.

I checked the ingredients of the Dove Men + Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Bar and found it to have a list of seventeen ingredients. Some of the ingredients were more than four unpronounceable words long.

Yes, I like the plain, old Ivory soap better. The Dove Men + Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Bar just did not cut the mustard. It is too pricey. The scent is overpowering and not pleasant. The moisturizer leaves a greasy feeling on your skin which made me feel unclean. However, my biggest problem with the product is the ingredients. I am certain Unilever has tested the product thoroughly but it still scares me to see so many chemicals used in a bar of soap.

My recommendation is to save your money. This pricey soap is not worth the buck a bar they charge. If you are like me, you'll be reaching for something else to wash off the odor and the greasy feeling after taking a shower with the Dove Men + Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Bar.
