News Corporation, the parent company of Dow Jones & Company, is interested in selling their index business, which includes the ionic Dow Jones Industrial Average. This was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. CNBC also reported the possible sale of the Dow Jones index unit.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the best known stock market index in the United States. The index contains 30 of the largest companies on the New York Stock Exchange. The American public view the performance of the stock market by the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Although there are other indices that better represent the overall stock market, the Dow is the most quoted index in the United States.

News Corporation took over Dow Jones & Company in 2007. Dow Jones is the publisher of the Wall Street Journal. Besides Dow Jones & Company, News Corp owns the Fox News Channel, the New York Post, Harper Collins, Sky News, the Fox television network and various other television stations, newspapers and magazines in the United States and around the world. News Corporation is led by Rupert Murdoch.
