Down Under and All Over

From Australia to America

Michele Starkey

My husband and I met a couple (Brett and Merci Betts) from Australia at a local campground called Winding Hills in Montgomery, New York. They had flown over from Down Under and have traveled 10,000 miles since beginning their trip on June 4th in Santa Monica, Calif. They have seen more of America in the past 4 weeks than most Americans see in their lifetimes.

The most amazing connection occurred between us and we sat for hours looking over the maps, calendar entries and photographs of their journey. It was a splendid way to finish our short staycation in the Hudson Valley.

They have traveled through the Grand Canyon and walked on the streets of Las Vegas and then they headed down to Texas and Brett was most proud of his purchase of Ostrich skinned Cowboy Boots. Merci told us that she was overwhelmed as they drove through Louisiana and Alabama and saw the devastation caused by the hurricanes.

The Betts shared with us that the Global Economic downturn has not spared the Aussies but they had planned for this trip well in advance and the rewards were many. They are encouraging their Australian "mates" to come to America for vacation especially while the exchange rate is still good.

When we left them on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, they were heading to the car races at Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania and then on to NYC for a few days before they leave America on July 26th.

Brett was proud to share his photos of their home in Australia and his "Ut" which is his utility vehicle or his truck. They extended an invitation for us to come and visit them down under even though they are planning another trip to America in a few years to visit the Northern United States. They highly recommended 1-800-RV4Rent if you are in the market to go RVing and drive around the country. They told us they paid about $120 per day (unlimited mileage) and the RV folks were checking in with them ever so often just to make sure things were going smoothly.

If you pass by a stranger with an accent, I encourage you to speak with them. You never know who you will meet even though you are just a few miles from home.

I've met Russians and others! By the way: have to love the name Brett Betts. I'll assume he hates gambling.

How cool! That is many miles to travel but it sure would be an adventure. They were blessed by meeting you as there are many very rude American's and you were certain to be the most polite and kindest American's to meet.
