Dofus is a French game, done by Ankama. It's free to play if you wish to stick to a limited area and have limited options as far as jobs. If you wish to play the entire world of Dofus, you can pay a monthly fee, the amount you need to pay depends on your country.

Look and Feel

Dofus is a cute game, almost too cute. The artwork is fantastic, and the characters are largely customizable. The background maps are stationary, with way points to move you from map to map. If you need a break from dark dismal games, Dofus might be what you are looking for. It's bright and colorful, and more than occasionally downright silly.

Character Classes

Dofus has 11 character classes, the free to play version of the game, each of which is cute and some of which are just down right funny! You can play up to five Characters at one time and all the characters on one server will share a bank account, which is actually horribly convenient.

Professions

Dofus allows each character to learn 3 professions. The free version has 18 "professions" available and you will want to choose wisely since you can't learn a new profession until you reach level 30 in the ones you have already chosen. Reaching level 30 is easier for some professions than others. Two professions that you can't take unless you pay to play are the alchemist and the tailor, although I've heard of people getting tailoring by spending 30,000 Kama's, or gold pieces, buying the tailoring book from someone who did pay to play.

The Gathering Professions

Lumberjack, hunting, mining, fishing and farmer are the five "Gathering Professions" but the crafting professions are where things really get interesting, you have a choice of 15 crafting professions.

The Crafting Professions

Dofus allows you to choose three of 15 basic crafting professions.

7. Dagger smith,
8. Axe smith

11. Fishmonger

Unfortunately, the Alchemist Quest, is not available on the free game, since it requires going to an area, you can only play in if you pay to play. The same is true for the tailor quest but you can buy the results you need for about 30k Kamas.

I've found it easiest so far to be a farmer.

Quests

This is one of the things the game really has going for it. Not all of the quests involve killing things and some characters must finish small quests to get their starting items. Most of the starting quests are actually fairly amusing and other players seem very quick to help. Two of my favorite things about this game so far has been the quest log, and the compass. The quest log keeps track of your quests and where you are in them (many quests have multiple tasks) and the compass points you in the direction you need to go for your next step ! A real boon for those of us who have no sense of direction.

Interface

Not the most instinctive, but not as bad as some others out there. When you begin the game you are given the option of following a NPC who will teach you how to use the interface. I'd suggest you take it.

Game play

I normally don't like games that have static maps, but the maps on Dofus load quickly, so I don't mind so much. If there is too much going on in one map area, everyone turns into little pokemon type characters to save on memory ! This is a setting you can change to what is most convenient for you.

Servers

Dofus has four servers. Three of which are French. The "Rushu" server is international and it's official language is English. You will however, find a good deal of people speaking in other languages, making it a great way to practice your Spanish, or other language you might be learning.

Help

Help for Dofus is readily available online and in game. The Ankama website has a wealth of information and there is also a forum you can go to to ask whatever questions you have. In addition there is a Dofus wiki.
