Downsizing Your Closet

Laura Leiva
We all have clothes in our closets that shouldn't be there. From a pair of jeans that are either four sizes too big or too small to that favorite blouse that's seen better days. While spring cleaning is something that should be done as it warms up, going through your wardrobe and paring it down to just the things you need or use is often last on the list. Organizing your closet not only helps you maintain a tidy looking space, but it gives you a chance to start fresh with your wardrobe. Have you lost weight recently? How amazing would it be to get rid of those too-large outfits once and for all? Here are a few ways you can get rid of the clutter in your closet now:

Take an Inventory

The easiest way to clean out the closet is to just take everything out. Removing each item from the closet will allow you to literally start with a clean slate. As you are taking everything out of the closet, don't worry about deciding which clothes will go where. Instead, throw away items that look obviously worn or damaged so you don't have to deal with them anymore.

Charity or Keep?

There is a common rule when it comes to deciding whether or not to keep an item, known as the 6-month rule. While it's generally a good idea to donate anything you don't remember when the last time you wore it, the 6-month rule is slightly subjective. Formal attire, seasonal clothing and keepsake items are all things you should probably keep even if you don't wear them very often. If you come across something you haven't worn for ages and don't plan on wearing in the future, toss it in the donation pile.

Organization

As you begin putting items back in the closet, place clothing you frequently wear in the most accessible location of the closet. That way, you can easily find your work attire or casual Saturday wardrobe options without shuffling through the winter sweaters. If you store your seasonal clothing outside of the closet, you can organize your clothing based on type or even color. For example, group T-shirts, blouses or tank tops together so when you're in the mood for a certain style top you know where to go.

Organizing your closet is simple and can be just the task to do on a weekend day to prepare for a new season. Once you get rid of old or out-of-style clothes taking up space in your closet you'll notice how much space is left. Another bonus of getting rid of unworn clothing? You can go shopping for new styles.
