Downtown Brooklyn is going green. A California-based firm, Hargreaves Associates, is working on the design for Willoughby Square Park. The park is set to replace a strip of old tenement buildings along Duffield Street.

Construction cannot begin until the street's current residents have been officially evicted and the buildings are razed.

Renderings of the projected park, which will be situated just a block west of Flatbush Avenue, makes it look like it will be a lush mirage in the middle of a concrete jungle. There will be plenty of open grass, shade trees, and seating for the community to enjoy.

Could this new park be the new green heart of downtown Brooklyn? City officials certainly think so. According to the New York City Department of City Planning's proposal for the park, the triangular park is meant to enhance the corporate area for new development much like the Channel Gardens did for Rockefeller center years ago.

Though the park is meant to create public spaces, its birth will also take away people's homes. Dozens of tenants are being forced out of the buildings that will need to be torn down to begin work on the park.

No timeline has been set by the city for completion of the park to date.
