Downtown Los Angeles Hotel Dining Options

Ted Sherman
A new and developing area, downtown Los Angeles has some great hotels, both classic and brand-new. All the hotels offer various restaurants and dining experiences, I've selected my five favorite spots. Whether you're a guest in the hotel, visiting Los Angeles and staying downtown or a local, I think hotel dining is a great experience. Luxury hotel staff understand service and I find you get a higher level of service and attention than at a restaurant not part of a hotel.

Here are five great DTLA hotel dining options:

The Biltmore
The stately Millenium Biltmore Hotel has been the place to stay and dine since it opened over 85 years ago. Now it sits in a lively, renovated downtown Los Angeles area, again an upscale dining option a period of isolation and decline.

The ornate Gallery Bar and Cognac Room serves food from 4 P.M. through the evening and is a wonderful space. The food features some of the hotel's classic dishes, sometimes literally. The 1920's style shrimp cocktail is served in the hotel's original vintage silver. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served at the hotel's Italian restaurant, Smeraldi's. The breakfast buffets are really good and many classic Southern Italian dishes are served during lunch and dinner.

For those who like a fancy afternoon tea, the hotel serves a formal tea service from Wednesday through Sunday at 4 P.M. in the beautiful Rendezvous Lounge. The space was the hotel's original lobby and looks like it came out of a castle, with intricate carving and woodwork. We like to have drinks and sandwiches here when we come downtown to shop, the Lounge serves a basic bar lunch menu each afternoon.

The Standard
The Standard in downtown Los Angeles offers cool and stylish dining. The Restaurant (that's the name) in the lobby is open 24/7 and I find the food very good. The rooftop pool also serves food and is a great place for a lunch. The view over downtown L.A. is beautiful. The rooftop is currently sporting a Biergarten, featuring all the German fall culinary delights: sausages, beer and streudel.

Ritz-Carlton
With an equally spectacular view as the Standard, WP24 by Wolfgang Puck at the new Ritz-Carlton in downtown Los Angeles has floor-to-ceiling windows and occupies the 24th floor on this new high-rise building. The food is Puck's signature Asian-fusion cuisine and I love it. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 5:30 P.M. (4 on Sundays) and features two rooms, a dining room and a lounge. The lounge is a more casual space and serves small plates for sharing, along with terrific sushi. The dining room has a three-course fixed price menu, along with a ten-course tasting menu.

Hilton Checkers
I find the small Hilton Checkers to be real hidden treasure in downtown Los Angeles. The hotel sits right next to the main branch of the library, across the street from The Biltmore. It's a small, boutique property, with a nice little restaurant that more and more locals have been discovering. My son's wife works directly behind the hotel and they love meeting there for lunch. He constantly remarks about the good food and excellent service. There is also an outside patio for dining as well.

The Checkers Downtown Restaurant, as it's called, specializes in local, fresh cuisine, driven by what's fresh and available each day. The dining room is classic and a bit formal, the proximity to L.A.'s business, legal and banking centers means it attracts an upscale clientele. As a bonus, dinner guests get free transportation to the local theaters. The hotel is near the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion where stage, opera and music events are held, and is also near the Disney Concert Hall.

Westin Bonaventure
An iconic part of the downtown Los Angeles skyline since the 1970s, the Westin Bonaventure still has a revolving cocktail lounge. The BonaVista Lounge on the 34th floor, spins slowly, offering a changing view of the skyline, hills and mountains in the distance.

A revolving cocktail lounge is fun, but the real action is happening one floor up, at the LA Prime steakhouse on the 35th floor. Featuring USDA-certified prime steak, along with Maine lobster and seafood, this restaurant combines great food and great views.
