Dr. Fick, the Orthopedic Chiropractor of Cincinnati

Cincinnati's Best Kept Secret for Chiropractic Medicine in Cincinnati

T.C. Hana
I walked into the doctor's office and was greeted by a friendly young lady who asked me to sign in. I explained to her that I was a new patient and she went over everything with me, and asked me if I could fill out all the appropriate paperwork for her. Upon finishing the paperwork, I sat and took time to observe the office itself. I saw the borage of certificates indicating where this gentleman had gone to college, along with a display of biofreeze and a small sign speaking of the mind, body connection. I looked just above where I was sitting and observed rich mahogany frames with pictures of horses, riders, and what appears to be the doctor himself. Within minutes, the same man I saw in the picture entered the office and said, "Good morning" as he passed by. Indeed, that was Dr. Fick.

I observed that the office was pretty busy, so that was a good sign. I had been to a few other chiropractors wondering why their offices were so empty. Within ten minutes, I was being called in to meet with Dr. Fick. He introduced himself and asked me several questions about what was going on. II proceeded to share my story about massive headaches that were landing me in the emergency room monthly (one so horrible they believe I had bleeding on the brain and gave me a spinal tap), and previous visits to a chiropractor that only gave me slight improvement. I had just hit a deer two weeks prior to this day and the problems were coming back to the surface. It wasn't just about my back and neck; it was the headaches, my shoulder, carpal tunnel, and my hips being out of alignment. As he was testing my motor skills he observed the scar on my throat. He asked me, "Neck surgery or thyroid surgery"? Little did I know that one question would open a new door for me.

Dr. Fick asked if I wanted x-rays since I had already had them done a year prior. I was shocked that he asked me if I wanted them. Every single chiropractor I had ever been to do ask me, but just told me "we are taking x-rays and then we will go over them". I was never given the option, but I took it. I told him that I wanted to see the difference between my original x-rays and the ones he would take today. He took a few shots of my neck, and a few of my hips. The year prior, my x-rays had shown my right hip was about a quarter inch higher than my left. I was anxious to see the improvement in my hip area.

I waited to see the x-rays, and once I was called in, I got a surprise. The x-rays of my hips were significantly better, however my neck showed no improvement at all. I had been duped into believing that I was getting better by a previous chiropractor. While my hips were getting better, my neck was not at all, yet I had even been informed by the previous chiropractor that my neck was in the worst shape that he had ever seen. In my mind, as I was being told yet again by Dr. Fick that my neck was thirty percent worse than the worst x-ray, then why was my neck not treated more aggressively? Why did we also not discuss help with the carpal tunnel, my shoulder, and many other things surrounding why I was there?

It's simple. Dr. Fick is the Orthopedic Chiropractor of choice in Cincinnati, Ohio. When I was waiting in the office, I had overheard conversations of therapy and could hear the use of machinery not far from where I was sitting. I had read on the website that he was an Orthopedic Chiropractor, but I didn't know much about it. I had never heard of that before, I only knew that there were chiropractors. I had only been to the "chiropractor", but not an "orthopedic chiropractor". So, we reviewed the trust factor, and whether or not he could help me with other things after he reviewed my x-rays. There was nothing left to the imagination, he addressed it all. So, the next step prior to his adjustment was a pleasant surprise.

Prior to each adjustment, I go the "roller bed", and his therapist Amy puts electronic stimulation on my neck. It helps to decrease the level of pain, and it reprograms neuropath ways. When I walked into the office that day I couldn't turn my head either way, and the pain of the pulled muscle was agonizing. I was on the roller bed for fifteen minutes, and it was basically a massage from heaven for my entire body. The significance of this "roller bed" is so much more than relaxing prior to an adjustment. It also squeezes toxins out of the spine, and aids in the movement of your spinal fluid. It is like total therapy for you without you having to do any work.

When I was called in for the adjustment he asked me how I felt. I felt okay as far as relaxation, but I still couldn't turn my head without cringing. He had me lay face down on the adjustment table, so I thought what I was getting was the traditional hand walk up the spine. What I got first was my first neck adjustment face down. I had never had that before. I guess Dr. Fick is a good mind reader too, he said "Oh by the way, this is a pretty aggressive neck adjustment too if that is okay. There are ten levels of neck adjustments, and guess which one you are?" I responded quickly with total confidence that I was a level ten. Of course I was, my neck was thirty percent worse than the worst x-ray. My neck had no curvature to it at all. In fact, it looked as if it was starting to go backwards. I was still puzzled as to why the previous chiropractor didn't adjust my neck more aggressively if it was this bad.

The next part of the adjustment was a surprise too. He had me lay on a table and he buckled me in, then he proceeded to wrap a hospital gown around my neck. While he was standing behind me he pulled a few times to see if neck was released enough, then the final pull was little stronger. I could feel my spine release from the bottom up very quickly. Wow, what a great adjustment technique. Everything was so tight in my back and neck, partly due to the fact I had stopped going for adjustments due to my thyroid surgery. I was seeing Dr. Fick at the end of May, and I had not been to the previous chiropractor since October of 2008. I had spent many days lying in bed due to the hospital stays and post operation, so my body needed a complete overhaul.

Over time, I have learned a lot about Dr. Fick and his staff. Dr. Fick has twenty five years of experience with Chiropractic Medicine, and recently became licensed in Acupuncture as well. A few months back he was observing my thyroid surgery scar, and asked me if I would like for him to help me get rid of that scar. I asked him how. I had only been given the option of radiation by the surgeon because the scar was doing what is referred to as "keloiding". The scar was raised, and looked blistery almost like the afterthought of a burn. It was also red, and it was not blending in my natural skin tone. Dr. Fick explained to me that the only way to get rid of a scar like that was to "bleed" the scar. I was intrigued and decided it was a better option than radiation. After all, a doctor recommended radiation to me knowing the risk involved.

Dr. Fick pulled out the latex gloves and went to work with a Teflon needle. He could identify the strength of the scar tissue very easily. It was pretty tough, so the first few times it was stressful to go through. However, by the third time around, the scar received the needle better and over time that scar is significantly smaller and starting to blend in. It is amazing to me that the natural treatment had been more of a benefit to me than the previous attempts of the surgeon to give me Cortisone shots. The shots were completely ineffective, the scar looking exactly the same as it had before.

In addition, Dr. Fick listens to the patient. He hears more than what you say about your neck, your back, and shoulder. Dr. Fick is a healing doctor; there is no doubt in my mind. He listened to my thyroid story, and the changes that came with that, mainly dramatic weight gain since the surgery. In discussing various issues with Dr. Fick, he suggested an adrenal supplement, and why it would be effective for me. Upon taking that supplement Drenamin, I have had improvement with energy, appetite, and was able to lose five pounds in a week prior to my wedding because of the uptake with my metabolism.

Not all chiropractic physicians are created equal. After consistent visits to Dr. Fick's office, I have had fifty percent improvement in my neck, my back and other areas of my life. The Drenamin supplement and the advice he gave me was just the icing on the cake. I would recommend Dr. Fick to anyone, and the warm, friendly staff is just an added bonus. Dr. Fick also has six other offices you can go to, where you can meet with his associate doctors across the Cincinnati area. Dr. Fick works out of his office which is in the Springdale area, right off of Route4. To see him today call (513) 851-8686.
