In 2008, Dr. Phil was sued for a large sum involving the Natalie Holloway Case. A defamation suit was filed by Surinamese brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, who claim they had no involvement in the Natalie Holloway case. They claimed defamation, invasion of privacy, emotional distress, fraud, deceit, and civil conspiracy. They claimed that Dr. Phil altered sections of a recorded conversation betweek the two, which created "create false, incriminating, and defamatory statements that the plaintiffs engaged in criminal activity against Natalee Holloway."
In 2006, Dr. Phil settled another lawsuit for $10.5 million, filed by unhappy customers of his infamous "Shape Up!" diet plan, which has since been discontinued. Three customers filed the lawsuit, claiming Dr. Phil defrauded fans with his venture into the diet supplement business. They say he made false claims about diet pills. Although Dr. Phil denied any wrongdoing, he did agree to the $10.5 million lawsuit settlement. Thousands of eligible customers were given the option of either choosing replacement products, or receiving a small cash reward.
Back in 2003, convicted murderer Lauri "Bambi" Bembenek also filed a lawsuit against Dr. Phil McGraw. She appeared on his show to clear her name, but she claimed that Dr. Phil and his 52 accomplices (Dr. Phil staff) imprisoned her in a Marina Del Rey apartment. She claimed she was trying to escape through a window, and shattered her leg in the process, leading to a leg amputation. She claimed she was forced to stay in the apartment for an indefinite period of time, without any access to phone, television, or radio.
