Dr. Seuss Activities for Kids

Fun Ways to Celebrate Dr. Seuss with Your Children

Jo Brielyn
March 2 marks the birthday of one of the most popular authors in children's literature, Dr. Seuss. All across the United States, bookstores, libraries and schools will be celebrating his birth and his legend by taking part in Read Across America Day sponsored by the National Education Association. Whether you're a teacher searching for new ideas to excite students about reading or a parent looking for fun ways to bond with your child, these Dr. Seuss activities for kids are sure to do the trick.

Paint in true The Foot Book fashion. Roll out a long sheet of brown or white packaging paper outside or on a washable floor. Squirt washable finger paints onto paper plates, providing a different color for each foot. Have your child take of his shoes and dip the foot into the paint. Do the same with the other foot. Let your child create his own masterpiece using only his feet. Why not join in the fun and add your own footwork to the creation?

Tap into the child's creativity and make a Seuss-like story book together. Print out two copies a fun shape - like this Cat in the Hat striped hat design - to serve as the front and back covers. Have your child color and decorate both covers and cut them out. Add lined paper in the middle and staple them together to form a small book. Help your child write or draw a short silly story or poem to fill the pages.

Cook and eat green eggs and ham together. The Dr. Seuss-inspired meal is simple enough to make with your child. Start by separating the yolks and whites of the eggs. Set the yolks aside in another bowl, being careful not to break them. Mix the egg whites with a few drops of green food coloring until they reach the desired shade of green. Add the yolks back into the whites and fry them. To make green ham, add four drops of green food coloring to a fourth cup water and then have your child paint a few thick slices of ham. Grill or fry the ham slices and serve together with the green eggs. Read Green Eggs and Ham together while you enjoy your own colorful meal.

Have a Fox in Socks movie marathon. Choose a few favorite Dr. Seuss cartoons or movies for the event, such as the family-friendly comedic version of Horton Hears a Who! starring Jim Carrey and Steve Carell. Enjoy a quiet evening of movies with your child or liven it up by inviting some of her friends and their parents to join the movie marathon. Everyone must wear their wackiest socks in order to receive admission for this movie event.

Visit Seussville online and play with your child. The fun site is packed with online and printable games and activities for kids of all ages. Children can play a Fox in Socks matching game, try to catch a Thing, and create their own stories using Dr. Seuss characters and scenery with the Seussville Storymaker tool.

Whichever Dr. Seuss activities you decide to use with your child, remember to celebrate the essence of what Seuss' stories represent to millions of fans, imagination and loads of fun. Let loose, act silly, and enjoy your kids!
