Draft

Lee Hartsell
Mr. President and Congress,
Maybe it is time to reinstate the draft. For many years the Americans have been spoiled by not having to serve our country.

In World War 1- On May 7, 1915 the United States had remained neutral on the war efforts until Germany sank the Luistania liner. The Luistania had American passangers on board. Woodrow Wilson took a stand, after American citizens protested. September 1, 1915 Woodrow Wilson stated that submarines could not sink ships. If they did sink the ships, they had to provide safety measures for non-military passengers. On January 31,1917 Germany announced that their would be no restriction on submarine warfare. War was declared on April 2, 1917.

World War 11- The deadliest war in history started in 1939. Japenese war planes attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The United States had tried to stay neutral with Allies, until this time. The following day Congress declared war between the United States, Germany, and Italy. On December 11, 1941 the declaration of war papers were exchanged. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President.

Vietnam- President Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon all approved supporting South Vietnamese. They were afraid that communism could expand. Many countries had forced themselves on South Vietnam. In 1954, the United States got involved in Vietnam.

These Presidents were men of honor. The military protected our freedom on foreign soil and were loved. Presidents were not impeached for protecting our country. Presidents were supported.

I remember my oldest brother going to sign up for the Selective Service, when he was 18. Back in the 1970's all boys 18 years of age served their country. Right around this time, the decision was made to stop the draft.

My younger brother served in Desert Storm. We wondered many nights, if he was still alive. We as Americans, and a family, were proud of my brother.

Today, my oldest son rides home on a plane and wonders who likes him. American boys and women serving in our military, have to hide their a love for our country. They have to fight for the Constitution of the United States, for their family, freedom, and English to be the only U.S. Language.

American men and women stand in check out lines and put down our President and military. Boys and girls get into gangs and fight among themselves. Drugs and crime rates are high. They wind up in jail, when they have no confidence in themselves.

Mexicans come here declaring rights to vote, when it is suppose to take 7 years to be a citizen. Do the Mexicans know our Hisory and will they learn English? They brought their crime rate with them, when they were allowed to enter our country. What are they going to do about their gangs? Will these Mexican- Americans fight for America?

If the draft is reinstated, the boys will learn to be responsible for their own actions, have self pride, and a desire to defend our freedom.
