Dragon-Half Review

Like a lot of great anime out there some series simply don't get the attention they deserve. Either a show isn't nearly as 'satisfyingly' long as it could be. Or they are ignored by the fans and slip under the radar. Whatever the case may be these wonderful shows will sometimes emerge for certain fans and the longing for a continuation or sequel starts to burn within them.

So what show am I talking about this time? Why it's Dragon-Half this time.

This show is based on the 7 volume manga which was released in Japan in 1988 and ran until 1994. A two episode OVA (Original Video Animation) was released in 1993 in two volumes.

Main Characters:

Mink: Mink is the heroine of this show. She's a dragon-half. Meaning she's half human and half dragon. Her father who used to be a famous swordsman was charged with killing a red dragon, but instead f killing her, he fell in love and married.

Lufa: Lufa is Mink's best friend. Lufa is an elf who occasionally shoots lightning at her friends.

Pia: Pia is a young dwarf who's always garbed in heavy armor thanks to her over protective parents. She also carries around a small mouse named Mappy which can transform into a huge, scary monster.

Dick Saucer: Dick Saucer is a dragon slayer and music idol. He's changed with killing Mink after the king's plans for her backfires. Mink is a huge Dick Saucer fan.

Princess Vina: Is a slime half and the king's daughter. The girl becomes extremely jealous of Mink after the girl get's a kiss from Dick Saucer (by accident of course). Princess Vina's mother was a full slime-half until she stole a magic potion that turned her into a human. She married the king and had a baby. Princess Vina was born a full human until she used a magic spell to turn her into a human. Sometimes when Princess Vina get's hurt she'll turn back into a slime-half.

King Siva: King Siva is the main villain of the series. He wants to kill Mink's father and marry his red dragon wife.

Damaramu: Damaramu is first charged with killing Mink, but fails utterly. He refers to himself in third-person. He also claims to have a 'compact brain' which basically saved his life during his first battle with Mink.

Rosario: Rosario is the brains of King Siva's operation. He's the one who comes up with the plans, but hardly ever gets the credit for them.

Plot:

'Dragon Half' the anime series is about a girl named Mink who is a dragon-half. One day while hunting for food the girl is knocked out and kidnapped by Rosario. When Mink wakes up King Siva bribes the girl with a free Dick Saucer concert ticket, which Mink happily excepts.

Unfortunately the ticket is a fake. After a battle with Princess Vina, Mink get's a accidental kiss from Dick Saucer, but Princess Vina quickly reminds the girl that she is a Dragon-Half and Dick Saucer is a dragon hunter. After that Mink, Lufa and Pia set off to find a people potion to turn Mink into a full human.

My Thoughts:

Even though Dragon-Half is only two episodes long I still love it. The comedic timing in these episodes are great and it honestly leaves you wanting more. You see Mink doesn't get the people potion in this anime. And the manga series is only 7 volumes long, so of course you wonder what happens. Unfortunately the people making the show had a lack of interest in actually finishing it. And that's why it's only two episodes long.

Thankfully we can enjoy that show thanks to ADV films.

So I would actually recommend checking this series out. You can get the DVD pretty cheap too.

Alright! If you love references as much as I do then you'll enjoy this. Slime-Half's made an appearance in the movie 'Slayers The Motion Picture'. There you can see three Slime-Half's playing with each other. At one point Naga The Serpent tells them "Huh? What do you want slime-half? You're no fun. Go bug a dragon-half."

This is fun because Princess Vina is a slime-half and she's Mink's rival.
