Dragons and Elves

A Childhood Experience

A Powers
We played on silver knees as dragons and elves
And even the dirt on our faces had meaning.
We wove such complex plots of heaven and hell
And ran and hid and bled, still make-believing.
And we died often for each other, never for ourselves,
For, without her, how could he go on living?
We raised our swords with rage if one knight fell,
And ran into the battle, fury seething...
And sobbed out loud our poetic farewells
As the other slipped softly into God's keeping.
And we made blood pacts and swore to never tell
Of the magic we recited every evening.
And Mother called us back inside and out of our spell
And asked us how we played as we were eating.
We could still feel our armor and the breeze in the dell.
And our swords lay 'neath our sheets when we lay dreaming.
