Drawer #2

A Locked Up Past: Part 5

Bud Young
"Hello again, Mr. Jones"

"Yeah, hello, Mr. Anderson, I have a feeling you were kind of expecting me."

"Yes, Mr. Jones, I was."

"Why is that?"

"Let's open that next drawer. I know you will find your answer in there."

Mr. Anderson led Tony back to the safe deposit boxes.

"Now, Tony. . .I'm sorry, Mr. Jones. Your father opened this box just before his last trip to the hospital. I'll leave the rest for your father."

Tony was beyond aggravation. How did this guy get so involved with his father's final decisions? Tony's thoughts were interrupted by the picture of the tiny corpse as Mr. Anderson slid open this second box. Inside, a plain brown envelope, with Tony's name on it. Then Tony noticed that above his name were the words, "For my Son." Tony's irritation softened.

"Tony?"

Tony looked at Mr. Anderson. There was no apology this time.

"Would you like to use my office? It is very private."

"Yes, Mr. Anderson, I would like that, thank you."

Mr. Anderson led Tony into a corner office. The only window had drawn curtains. Mr. Anderson pulled his chair out for Tony, turned and left closing the door behind him. Tony stood there for a moment. His mind was racing. Curiosity mixed with the fear of the unknown could plainly be seen on his face. Tony took the offered chair and sat the envelope on the table. "Dad, did you have to die to open up to me?" Tony sat there. He slowly opened the envelope and pulled out the papers inside. Tony turned the envelope upside and shook it, nothing came out. Tony sighed. "Good, no more keys."
