Jennifer Hudson was absolutely phenomenal. If any of you saw her on the American Idol series than you already had a glimpse of her talent in the singing arena. I thought she had a powerful voice on American Idol but fortunately she did not win. The opportunity she was able to receive by not winning is far better than what she wouldn't have gotten as an American Idol winner.
As far as I know Jennifer did not have any prior training in acting. But let me tell you she was captivating. Anytime you can feel the emotions of an actor or actress lets you know that they are truly engaged in their part. To a certain degree she probably was able to relate to this part due to the challenges she has encountered in her own endeavors.
I heard through the grapevine that Beyonce wanted this role for herself. She didn't get the part because she wasn't able to gain the amount of weight the part required. Personally I think the part was more suited for Jennifer. Not because of the weight, but rather because of the power house voice and the passion she exemplified in playing the part. Jennifer brought tears to my eyes every time she sang a song. She exuded so much passion that it was unbelievable.
As for Beyonce, she was beautiful as usual. I am sure it was difficult for her to hold back her voice to play this part. She added a sense of sensitivity to the movie. Her character was elegant and graceful. However, she did not stand out as much as Jennifer did. Perhaps because Jennifer is new blood. Beyonce's song "Listen" was also very powerful. I am sure many of us can relate to this song.
As for Eddie Murphy, he was crazy as usual. His character brought a sense of humor to the film. His singing was pretty good too. It was a little difficult to take his singing seriously because he was always goofing around.
My boy Jamie Fox. This guy is so dynamic. I absolutely enjoyed watching him on the screen. He is truly one who can take on any persona. He can get into any character. Not to mention the fact that he is so handsome. I guess you can say he was the villain in this film. He played it well.
To sum it up I was very pleased with this movie. I am actually planning to go and see it again. I like the fact that it was a musical type of movie which added another layer of excitement to the movie. The soundtrack will be one to remember for a long time. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie really needs to check it out.
