Dream Poem (1966)

Keith Mills
I tried to kill my faith
For it was killing me.

Look at this dream
Pushed into reality
From a purer age
When love held its
Own fascination.

A limousine waits outside
With her in the backseat:
Dark hair, white gown, she
Wears a pink wrist Mum I
Gave her across space and
Time, as we sailed above
The neon Magic Mile.

Her face, too, is pink
Almost aflame with joy.
Her eyes are as green
As any green I've seen.
On this Senior Prom night
She looks, as they say, right.

But enough of that, I say;
I'm taken in by the night -
Taken in by the vision
Of her, so astoundingly
Beautiful and innocent.
She says she's happy
Just to be with me.
And that's the way
It should always be.

Go ahead and dream, baby,
With your head in my lap.
We danced on fire tonight
You deserve to take a nap
Here in your father's Ford
Oh, but what a night, Lord

Oh, but what a night. . . .
