Dream Voyager: Behind Closed Eyes

Behind the eyelids of the dreamer is a wonderful world full of insight into things they have not yet resolved during their waking life. Dreaming is like taking a voyage into the realm of your hidden feelings.

In a recent dream, my partner and I were renting a house together. In "real" life we will be moving in together by the beginning of summer in 2009. Because of some past relationships taking a bad turn after coming together under one roof, I have been a little anxious. This relationship has been very healthy from the beginning and unlike any relationship I have ever known. There are some fears of abandonment that we have both talked about with the other. I also have fears that I may dominate the relationship or he may smother my space once we live together. Yet, being able to talk about these fears together calms my heart enough to have the courage to try again.

In the dream the house we were renting has a stream of water running through it. We walk together along the side of the stream, when suddenly it grows then branches into a few directions. My love is excited about this appearance yet he is content. However, I am feeling we need to choose one direction over another.

The house has the most beautiful garden filled with an assortment of flowers. A neighbor is there admiring our flowers and she points out a large white flower to me.

Finally, in the dream there is a washer and dryer built into the wall and I am putting in a mixture of clean and dirty laundry into the washer. When I put in already folded and clean laundry, I do not notice until they are already wet and I feel like I am wasting our resources.

Water symbolizes a few things to me. One would be the stream, flow or movement of its life giving elixir. Another symbol would be the dependency of life on it, which gives it a high value. Water also has cleansing properties, but in the context of this dream I am wasting the water to clean things that are already clean. Rather than just being content that our relationship will branch and move at times, I'm thinking one direction must be taken by me and my partner together. I am wasting my energy in worrying about how our relationship will change after we move in together rather than letting things happen organically.

Of course he and I will have our own separate interests and will need our solitude at times. The dream is showing me that I want to control the direction of movement in our relationship because of a fear that he will go in another direction without me.

Eventually this fear of mine would smother the relationship. So with my eyes fully open now I am able to remind myself that we are that beautiful garden filled with an assortment of flowers or interests. The neighbor points out the single white flower to me, reminding me of our oneness and our pure love. The neighbor represents the stream of consciousness that resides within me and how this illuminated state of consciousness shall now remind me of our singleness of heart when I feel insecure because we may not always have the same interests or needs.

I just read this article to my partner and he lovingly pointed out that no matter which voyage the water takes, it is all flowing in the same direction to one destiny. Our dreams may take us in many directions but we are one in love.
