Dreaming with My Eyes Open

April Higney
It is my dreams that awaken me in the face of reality,
the dreams of a better world,
far beyond the tragedies everyday we see.

It is my dreams that open my eyes at the injustices,
where there is no balance in the view.
The dreams based upon change,
that can only be changed by what is within all of you.

There are all of the "want-for-nots"
who hold well beyond their means,
then there are those like you and I,
who just cling to these simple dreams.

These dreams hold me in a better place,
where I can share time with my child without being in pain,
instead of sometimes having troubles walking,
where at thirty-four years old feeling like I need a cane.

I don't want to hear and read about reform,
something just needs to be done,
not just for me but the many others like me,
and the future daughter and son.

This dreamer does not just close her eyes to dream,
only at times wanting to envision it better than the truth at hand,
and hopefully all those who dream of more in this world,
will get together to take a necessary stand.
