A few minutes later, Crystal arrived at work."Ahhh, another day behind a register", she thought with a sigh, as she parked her truck. She slid her smock on and proceeded to go in. Crystal's friend, Dana, always ran her register during the night shift. Sometimes Crystal would come to work a little early to help Dana count her drawer at the end of her shift. Crystal would count and Dana would recount.
Crystal just couldn't concentrate. Her dream kept flashing through her mind. "What's wrong with you Crystal, you're counting everything wrong, and fumbling around this morning, you're not hung over are you", Dana asked. "No, it's nothing like that, I don't drink. I had a dream last night, that's all", Crystal said with a shrug. "Mm, was it a hot and juicy one, you wild girl", Dana asked with a mischievous grin. "No, no, not at all", Crystal said. "It was just weird, and I can't stop thinking about it", she added. "Well, what are you waiting for, tell me about it" Dana demanded. "I can't", Crystal said. "I can only remember bits and pieces of it", she added. "Well, tell me what you can remember", Dana said, being her usual dominant self. " OK, well, I feel as if I'm floating above everything, looking down, watching for something. It's foggy, and I can barely see anything. There's a car backed into the neighbors drive way, with it's headlights on, blinding me. The next thing I can remember is watching the car until the headlights disappeared, which is where I woke up", Crystal explained. "The weird part about it is, I think I actually saw the car from my dream, parked across the street this morning", Crystal added. "Don't worry Hun, it's probably just a coincidence", Dana said. "It's Two for Tuesday, we'll go to Skeeters for lunch and grab a couple of hot dogs, that will take your mind off of it", Dana added. Crystal nodded her head and stuck the drawer into her register.
After an hour of ringing orders up wrong, and giving incorrect change to customers, the boss, Mr. Bowman, asked Crystal to step into his office. "Is everything alright Crystal, you seem distracted today", Mr. Bowman asked. "Um, no Sir, actually I'm not feeling to well, and I can't concentrate, would it be to much of a problem for me to go home", Crystal asked. "Well, you still have all your sick days left, and I can call Judy in to run your register, so I don't see any problem with that. Go home, go to bed, and come in tomorrow feeling better", Mr. Bowman said. "Thanks Sir, I will," Crystal said, closing the door behind her. She closed her checkout line, counted her drawer, and left.
As Crystal neared her house, she began to feel very anxious, and shaky. She couldn't shake the feeling of impending doom. "Oh what's wrong with me", Crystal wondered. After making the right onto her street, she saw several police cars, and an ambulance. A policeman stopped her just below her drive way. "Where are you headed Ma'am", the policeman asked. "Right here", Crystal said, "I live here", she added. He motioned her on with a smile. Crystal pulled into her drive way, and immediately ran to the neighbors, to see what was happening. Mrs. Carouse was in the ambulance being looked after, and Mr. Carouse was talking to the police on the front porch. Crystal approached an officer, pecked him on the shoulder and asked, "Is everyone alright, what's going on here", with desperation in her voice. "Well Ma'am, if you would please, accompany me to my car so I can ask you a few questions", the officer said. "Sure", Crystal replied and followed behind him.
" What's your name", the officer asked. " Crystal Glass", she said. "Where do you live", the officer asked. "Right here, across the street", Crystal stated. "When was the last time you saw your neighbors daughter, Brittany Carouse", the officer asked. "This morning on my way to work, she was walking on her way to school", Crystal stated. "Did you notice anything out of the ordinary", the officer asked. "Well yes, as a matter of fact I did, I noticed that Brittany was wearing the same thing she'd wore to school yesterday", Crystal stated. "Well Ma'am, Brittany Carouse was out of town yesterday, and several days before, with her family, but you say you saw her yesterday", the officer said curiously. "Well, no, I don't guess I did", Crystal replied with a confused look. "What is this all about, why all the questions, and you didn't answer my question", Crystal said firmly. "Well Ma'am, Brittany Carouse never made it to school this morning, it seems she has vanished, and from what you have told me, you are the last person to see her before her disappearance, and it's my job to ask you these questions", the officer said politely. "I believe that's all the questions I have for you at this time Ms.Glass, here's my card, if you think of anything that may aid in our investigation, please contact me", the officer said. "Thanks Officer, I will", Crystal said. "It's detective, Detective Troy Newman", he said with a nod. Crystal slid the card into her back pocket and cut through the yard to her house.
Feeling a bit confused, she laid down on the couch. Her mind began to examine, and analyze everything that had taken place that morning. "Why did I think Brittany was wearing the same clothes she'd worn the day before, I couldn't possibly have seen her yesterday" Crystal thought to herself, biting her lip. "And the car, I didn't tell Detective Newman about the strange car from this morning. "I need to call him, but what do I say", she thought. "If I tell him the truth, he'll think I'm crazy", Crystal thought out loud. She pulled the card he'd given her, out of her pocket, and stared at it, rubbing it with her thumb. "Oh hell, why not", Crystal thought as she picked up the phone and began to dial the number.
On the third ring, a lady answered. "Hello, State Headquarters, Officer Crockett speaking, can I help you?", she said. "Yes Ma'am, may I speak to Detective Newman please, it's very important", Crystal replied."He's on scene ma'am, do you have a number where he can reach you?", Officer Crockett asked. "He has my number", Crystal stated. "In that case, if you'll give me your name, I'll page him, and have him call you", Officer Crockett said. Crystal left her name with the officer, thanked her, and hung up.
"Any minute now, he'll call back, any second the phone is gonna ring", Crystal thought as she began to pace the floor. She poured a cup of coffee, as if she really needed it, and waited by the phone. Finally the phone rang, and it was Detective Newman. "Officer Crockett told me to call you right away, is everything alright?', he asked."Yes, thank you, I'm fine, you said to call if I thought of anything, and I think I might have", Crystal said. "OK, well I'm tied up at the moment, with another case, but I can come by in an hour", Detective Newman said. "I'll see you then", Crystal replied. They both said goodbye and hung up.
After what seamed like an eternity, Detective Newman knocked on the door. Crystal opened the door, and welcomed him in. " So, what is it you'd like to tell me, Miss Glass?" he said. "Well I really don't know how to explain it, but I think I dreamed about Brittany's abduction", Crystal stated. "You say "abduction", all we know is that she disappeared, possibly a runaway", Detective Newman stated."How do you know she was abducted?", he asked. "I don't know, I just do", Crystal said. "Explain", Detective Newman said. "Well, I thought she was wearing the same clothes, not because I had seen her the day before, but because I dreamed about her, and I saw a strange car parked across the street this morning that looks like the same one in my dream. It gave me chills, and at first I thought I was just being paranoid", Crystal stated. "What kind of car", Detective Newman asked. "It's a light colored, larger sized car, with square headlights", Crystal explained. "Other witness, have reported seeing a similar car in the area, maybe you are onto something", Detective Newman said. "We need to find a way to get you to remember that dream, I'll make some phone calls, and see what I can figure out. I'll get back to you with the details", he added as he left, closing the door behind him.
Thirty minutes later the phone rang. It was Detective Newman, calling to inform Crystal that he had arranged for her to be hypnotized. Two hours later, there was a knock on the door. It was Detective Newman, and another rather distinguished looking gentleman. Crystal opened the door. 'This is Dr.Matthews", Detective Newman said, as they stepped inside. "Detective Newman, tells me that you want to remember a dream you had last night, is that correct, Miss Glass?", Dr.Matthews asked. "Yes, I believe I dreamed about the events of Brittany's abduction, and I think my dream can help the case", Crystal said. "Why would you want to remember such a thing", the doctor asked. "Because I think we can save her", Crystal explained. 'Yeah, so lets not waste any time here Doc", Detective Newman insisted."Lets get things started", he added.
Dr. Matthews made all the necessary preparations, and explained everything to Crystal, as she settled herself into a comfortable position on the couch. Once he had her under hypnosis, he began to ask her questions." Crystal, what day is it?" the doctor asked. "Monday, August 24th", Crystal said. "What do you see?", the doctor asked. "It's early morning, and I'm floating above the treetops, looking down on on everything. It's foggy, and I can't really see anything", Crystal stated. "Look harder, past the fog, and tell me what you see", the doctor said. "I see a strange car backed into the neighbors drive way, across the street. It's blinding me with it's headlights", Crystal explained. "The Carouses drive way?", Detective Newman asked. "No, at the Wards, 2 houses down", Crystal responded, as Dr. Matthews motioned at Detective Newman, not to do that again.
"Then what do you see Crystal, look hard, see details", Dr. Matthews asked. "The headlights are off now, and I can see a man sitting tall in the car."What does this man look like?", the doctor asked. Hes got long dark hair, a mustache, a scar across his nose, and no teeth. He's smoking a cigarette, and watching something", Crystal explained. "What is he watching?", the doctor asked. "Brittany and her Mom are talking on the porch. The man watches her as she walks down the drive way onto the sidewalk, never taking his eyes off her as he starts the car. Brittany rounds the street corner at the stop sign, the car follows her", Crystal explained. She had become somewhat agitated, and began to squirm on the couch.
"What does the car look like, can you see a license plate number?", Dr. Matthews asked. "I, I don't know, everything is so foggy", Crystal said. "Look past the fog, see the plate number clearly, and repeat it to me Crystal", the doctor demanded. "E...V..K....1..4...1..5, it's a beat up tan colored station wagon. It's also missing it's chrome, and front bumper. It's driver door is badly dented" Crystal replies. "What is he doing now", the doctor asked. "He quickly pulls the car onto the sidewalk, blocking Brittany's path. He grabs her by the hair and forces her into the front seat of the car", Crystal screamed. She had become very restless, and began to sweat.
"Where do they go Crystal, tell me?", the doctor asked impatiently. "He turns onto McCormick Street, and hits the highway. He takes the Myrtle Beach exit, and makes a right. I'm not sure how far he drives before, he makes the left turn onto an old dirt road. He follows the road to a run down farm, and pulls the car into the barn", Crystal explained. "Do you see any landmarks or objects nearby, things that can help identify the location", the doctor asked. " I see a billboard sign, picturing a knight on a horse, and there are some power lines close by", Crystal described. "I saw a red mailbox at the end of the driveway too", she added. Detective Newman recognized the description right away, "It's the old Hanson farm on route 322", he thought to himself. "He is dragging her out of the car now, she's screaming, and kicking, trying to get away. Oh God, he's picked up a rock, and now he's hitting her with it", Crystal explains, as she becomes more and more restless.
"He is taking her into the chicken house.I can't see what he's doing to her, but it sounds like he's beating her", Crystal said.Crystal had become emotional, and began to thrash around on the couch. "Calm down Crystal, and tell me where he is now", the doctor asked " He just stepped out of the chicken house, I can see his hands are covered in blood. He wiped them on his shirt tail. Now he's getting back in the car. He is leaving", Crystal explained. "Where is Brittany, Crystal, can you see her", the doctor asked. "She is in the chicken house, and I can hear her crying. He will kill her when he returns", Crystal cried, shaking, and squirming. Dr. Matthews quickly and safely brings her out of hypnosis. She felt wonderful, under the circumstances, but had no recollection of what she had just told Detective Newman, and Doctor Matthews. Immediately Detective Newman made a phone call, reporting what he had just learned, and in less than 30 minutes, Brittany Carouse was found, badly beaten, and raped, but still alive.
Crystal had never felt such joy, as she did when she learned that Brittany was alive. Crystal Glass learned to never ignore her dreams, because weather good or bad, dreams do come true. Crystal now works with the Police Dept, helping them solve cases like Brittany's, and is head of her neighborhood watch program. Brittany Carouse recovered well, and starts college next month in Utah.
The man who abducted Brittany, was found, arrested, and received a 25 year sentence.
