Ride This City's Very Efficient Transit System

If you find yourself in Dresden, Germany, you will have the luxury of riding one of the world's most efficient public transportation system. Catering to its passengers, the transportation system provides excellent coverage to most of Dresden's popular tourist attractions. Discounts and unlimited public transportation passes make it easy for travelers to get around the city without ever renting a car or hailing a taxi.

Dresden, Germany public transportation: Where it goes

Dresden, the capital of the German region of Saxony, has an easy-to-use public transportation system that makes it convenient for visitors to travel to many of the area's popular attractions. The Konigstein fortress, Moritzburg, Saxon Switzerland, and many other sights are within easy reach of the Dresden public transportation system. The S-Bahn train takes daily trips to most of these Dresden sights, while offering passengers a great view of the Elbe River along the ride.

Dresden, Germany public transportation: Unlimited passes

To make it even easier for passengers, the Dresden public transportation system offers tickets for unlimited bus, tram, and train travel. These discount passes can be purchase by the day or week, allowing tourists to simply buy one ticket for the entire duration of the trip. Not only is this usually far cheaper, but it also saves quite a bit of time in being able to avoid waiting in line for tickets later in the vacation. Most Dresden public transportation stops have been converted over to automated ticket sales and vending machines, so purchasing the tickets is quick and convenient even if you do not have a daily or weekly pass.

Dresden, Germany public transportation: City and Region cards

If you will be visiting many of Dresden's tourist attractions on your trip, consider purchasing the Dresden City Card instead. In addition to giving you unlimited use of Dresden's public transportation, this card also gives its holders admission to several of the city's museums and other attractions. The Dresden City Card can be purchased from some hotels and the city's tourist information center. There is a limited amount of time the Dresden City Card can be used, usually two days. If you prefer to see a wider area than just the immediate city, you can also purchase the Dresden Region Card, which extends the same privileges, but does not expire for three days and covers more of the nearby region. The Dresden Region Card gives you public transportation privileges extending through most of the Oberelbe region surrounding Dresden, which includes Saxon Switzerland, Meiben, and Moritzburg.
