Now first things first, get your hair done! Joan is a redhead and she wears her hair styled in a fun mini beehive. The best way to achieve Joan's fab 1960s 'do is to invest in a red wig styled in a bouffant. You can find one at any nice costume shop around Halloween or off of ebay. Don't worry about how bright red it happens to be, as you are going for a fun, retro office siren look.
Next, you need to find your Joan look. She is ALL about super tight, clingy sheath dresses and pencil skirts. The cool thing about this particular costume is that you can actually wear it any other time of year, as early 60s influenced pencil skirts and sheaths are all the rage in fashion now. That being said, you can probably find a Joan inspired outfit for sale at just about any department store. Dillards and Macy's both carry a line of retro looking sheath dresses in assorted colors as well as clingy pencil skirts and cardigan sets. However, if you don't want to spend the money on a whole new outfit and just want to wear it for Halloween, then there are always thrift stores and Goodwill shops. No matter where you get your outfit, make sure it is colorful, as Joan loves her bright hues. Some of her most memorable colors were red, green, navy blue, bright orange, and hot pink. No beiges or browns for this sassy babe!
Joan is all woman and knows how to rock her curves. She she is perhaps best known for her, ahem, 'assets' so you will need to wear a bustier or mini corset under your ensemble, stuffed to high heaven to achieve that extra little bit of 'Va va voom!' Also, don't forget to wear a pair of flesh colored seamed stockings and a garterbelt under your sheath, as that will give you a period correct edge. You can find any of the aforementioned undergarments at Frederick's of Hollywood, Victoria's Secret, or the online lingerie shop secretsinlace.com. Also, make sure you put a little wiggle in your walk with a pair of spiky stilletos or kitten heels!
Last but not least, you will need the ultimate Joan Holloway finshing piece: The pen necklace. Joan is always seen wearing a golden pen necklace at the office every day, and you can find several replicas at the website www.etsy.com. Just type in 'Joan Pencil Necklace' in the search engine and it will bring up several styles to choose from. Make sure you add a little brooch and some pearl earrings and you my dear are ready for work!
If you are in need of some Joan Holloway visuals, visit www.amc.com/originals/madmen and check out their extensive galleries of all the show's characters.
Have a safe and happy halloween!
